Kingsfold Dorm Room Throw by Wyndlestraw Designs
Project Overview
The Kingsfold Dorm Room Throw is a knitted blanket designed to provide warmth and comfort in cold, draughty spaces such as dorm rooms. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a reversible throw measuring 150cm (60 inches) long by 130cm (50 inches) wide—a practical size for wrapping around yourself while watching television or layering on a bed. The throw features a modern textural block stitch pattern that creates extra insulation and visual interest.
Design Versions
The Kingsfold Dorm Room Throw is offered in three distinct design variations, allowing crafters to choose based on personal style preference:
- Version A – Colour-Block Throw: Features a bold, graphic two-colour design with distinct colour blocks for a contemporary aesthetic.
- Version B – Striped Throw: Incorporates wide asymmetric stripes for a dynamic, modern look.
- Version C – Solid-Colour Throw: Worked entirely in a single colour for a simple yet effective, timeless design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level project requires fundamental knitting techniques that build foundational skills. Crafters will work with the following techniques throughout the pattern:
- Knitting and purling: The core stitches that form the fabric base.
- Increases and decreases: Shaping techniques used to structure the throw's dimensions and create textural variation.
- Block stitch pattern: A modern textural stitch that creates dimension, warmth, and visual appeal while maintaining reversibility.
- Long rows on circular needles: The throw is worked using circular needles to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the finished dimensions, allowing for comfortable handling of the expansive fabric.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Kingsfold Dorm Room Throw is designed to be worked in aran or worsted weight yarn, both of which provide the necessary substance and drape for a functional throw blanket. These yarn weights create a fabric with good insulation properties while remaining manageable in weight. Circular needles are required to work the long rows needed for this large-scale project.
Reversible Construction
A key feature of the Kingsfold Dorm Room Throw is its reversible design. The block stitch pattern and construction method allow the throw to be used on either side, providing versatility in coordinating with different room décors or bedding arrangements.
