Product Description

Kimono Wrap Revisited: a highly customizable crochet wrap pattern with sizes ranging from 3 months to 10 years and multiple options for finishing and closures. Make it in a camouflage variegated yarn or make a very girly version in pink with a picot or shell edging. Anything is possible!

You can add cute ties, or loops and buttons, to fasten. You can make it sleeveless, or with long sleeves. This pattern is written in American English crochet terminology.

Kimono Wrap Revisited by Susanne Visch

What is Being Made

The Kimono Wrap Revisited is a versatile crochet cardigan designed by Susanne Visch, available in two distinct silhouettes: a short sleeve version and a long sleeve version. This garment features a kimono-inspired wrap construction, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons. The pattern includes multiple size options across baby, toddler, and child ranges, allowing for customization based on finished measurements.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental garment construction techniques appropriate for crafters with some experience. The kimono wrap design utilizes strategic shaping and seaming to create the characteristic draped silhouette. The pattern incorporates optional button closures (2 size 2.5 cm buttons) for added functionality and design detail, though the wrap style allows for flexible wearing options without fasteners.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used throughout the Kimono Wrap Revisited is half double crochet (hdc), which creates a fabric with balanced drape and structure. This stitch choice provides an ideal weight and texture for a cardigan that maintains its shape while remaining comfortable for extended wear. The consistent use of half double crochet simplifies the pattern while producing a professional, polished finish.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern requires DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that works beautifully for layering garments. The yarn quantities vary based on sleeve length and size selection:

  • Main Color (MC) Short Sleeve Version: 255–795 meters (280–870 yards) depending on size
  • Main Color (MC) Long Sleeve Version: 325–1020 meters (355–1115 yards) depending on size
  • Contrast Color (CC) Both Versions: 65–105 meters (70–115 yards) for accent details

The sample garments were crafted using Zeeman Supersoft, a 100% acrylic yarn offering 198 meters (207 yards) per 50-gram ball. The samples showcase the design in multiple colorways including light blue, pink, green, and cobalt blue, demonstrating the pattern's versatility across different color combinations.

Tools and Gauge

A 4 mm crochet hook (US size G) is recommended for this project. Additional tools include removable stitch markers (4 recommended) to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.

Achieving the correct gauge of 15.6 stitches and 12.7 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in half double crochet is essential for proper fit. The pattern instructions emphasize taking time to check gauge before beginning, as this directly impacts the finished measurements and overall wearability of the kimono wrap.

Pattern Format

The Kimono Wrap Revisited is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use and convenient for reference during the crochet process.
