Kids Felted Slippers Knit Wool Pattern
What is Being Made
Kids Felted Slippers are full-coverage wool slippers designed by Monique Rae Designs. These slippers feature a unique construction method where both left and right slippers are knit identically using the same pattern. The slippers are engineered for complete foot coverage and include options for wide width soles, making them practical and comfortable for children.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create the slipper structure. The slippers are knitted in one piece, eliminating the need for sewing and simplifying the construction process. The pattern utilizes felting as a finishing technique, which transforms the knitted wool fabric into a denser, more durable material suitable for footwear. The yarn is used doubled throughout the entire pattern, which creates a thicker fabric and contributes to the felting process. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked into the knit rows to form the foot and heel sections.
Stitches and Shaping
The pattern primarily uses garter stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a textured, reversible fabric. Shaping techniques include k2tog (knit two together) decreases to reduce stitch counts and shape the heel and toe areas, and m1 (make one) increases to expand the sole width where needed. The pattern provides color-coded sizing instructions for small, medium, and large children, with specific row counts and stitch counts guiding the progression of the slipper from cuff to toe closure.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 100% worsted weight wool, used doubled throughout. Yardage varies by size: approximately 2.7 ounces/167 yards for small, 3.0 ounces/186 yards for medium, and 3.4 ounces/211 yards for large
- Needles: US size 11 (8.0mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches, paired with double-pointed needles in the same size for working small circumferences
- Additional Materials: Stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a row counter to monitor progress through the 65+ row pattern, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Gauge: 14 stitches and 22 rows equal 4 inches in garter stitch using double strands of yarn before the felting process
Pattern Details
The pattern includes wide width sole instructions as an option for children requiring extra room. The slipper construction progresses through multiple sections with decreases and increases strategically placed to shape the foot. The pattern demonstrates intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to be comfortable with circular needle techniques, double-pointed needle work, and understanding how to follow a color-coded size guide. The felting process after knitting completion creates the final durable texture and fit, making these slippers practical for active wear.
