Product Description
This simple cowl blends two of my favorite things in knitting - simple lace and simple cables - and ends up with a nifty shape that reminds me of ships’ keels. The points help the cowl fit nicely into the neck of a coat - leaving room for your chin and shoulders while giving a little length at the ears.
Keeled Cowl by Katherine Vaughan
What is Being Made
The Keeled Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted neck accessory designed by Katherine Vaughan. This cowl measures 17 inches in circumference by 7.5 inches in height, creating a distinctive silhouette inspired by the keel of a ship. The design features pointed shaping that allows the cowl to fit elegantly into coat necklines while providing adequate room for the chin and shoulders, making it both functional and stylish for layering over outerwear.
Techniques and Construction
The Keeled Cowl combines two fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its unique aesthetic: lace knitting and cable knitting. The lace elements are created using yarn overs and decreases, while the cable sections add textural depth and structure to the piece. The pointed shaping that gives the cowl its distinctive keel-like appearance is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked throughout the pattern. This intermediate-level project requires working in the round using circular needles, which ensures a seamless construction.
Stitches Used
The Keeled Cowl employs several essential knitting stitches to create its layered design:
- Knit (K) - the foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl (P) - used to create textural contrast
- Yarn Over (YO) - creates the openwork lace elements and adds decorative eyelets
- Knit Two Together (K2tog) - a right-leaning decrease used in lace and shaping
- Slip, Slip, Knit (Ssk) - a left-leaning decrease that provides balanced decreases in the lace pattern
- Cable Two Over Two Front (C2/2f) - slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
- Cable Two Over Two Back (C2/2b) - slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
The primary pattern stitch is a [yo, k2tog] lace repeat, which creates an open, airy texture that balances the denser cable sections.
Materials and Tools
The Keeled Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters. The pattern calls for 137 yards (125 meters) of DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that works beautifully for creating both delicate lace and defined cables. Construction requires one set of size US7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches, which are appropriately sized for working the cowl's circumference in the round. Additional tools include one cable needle for managing cable stitches and one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends upon completion.
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 31 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the [yo, k2tog] pattern stitch. Working to this gauge ensures that the finished cowl will measure the intended 17 inches in circumference by 7.5 inches in height. Knitters should swatch before beginning to verify their gauge with the specified yarn and needles.
