Product Description
The perfect throw-over summer sweater, Karuna is crocheted using motif squares that are joined together as they are being created. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions for each motif. Edging is worked around the body and sleeves, with a picot edge, for an elegant touch. All crochet terms are American.
Karuna Shrug by Kristen TenDyke
What is Being Made
The Karuna Shrug is a crochet bolero-style garment designed as a lightweight layering piece. This shrug is sized to fit bust circumferences of 33–38 (39–44, 45–50)" [84–96.5 (99–112, 114.5–127) cm], with finished measurements of 40½ (47, 53½)" [105 (122, 139) cm] measured around the shoulders. The shrug is shown in the smallest size of 40½" [105 cm].
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several specialized techniques to create texture and structure:
- Single Crochet (sc): A fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern, created by inserting the hook into the indicated stitch, yarning over, and pulling up a loop before drawing through all loops on the hook.
- Raised Half Double Crochet Front (Rhdcf): An advanced technique where the crocheter yarns over, inserts the hook from the front around the post of the indicated stitch, yarns over, and pulls up a loop before drawing through all three loops on the hook. This stitch creates dimensional texture by working around existing stitches rather than into them.
- Bullion Stitch: A decorative technique that involves wrapping yarn multiple times around the hook to create a textured, dimensional effect when drawn through loops.
Materials and Tools
The Karuna Shrug is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight and uses crochet hooks in US sizes C/4 (2.75 mm) and E/4 (3.5 mm). The pattern notes that hook selection is important—choose hooks with a smaller head relative to the shaft, as this allows the head to easily slide through the wraps of the bullion stitch.
The sample shown in the pattern was created using Quince & Co's Sparrow yarn, which is 100% organic linen at 50 grams per ball. This natural fiber choice aligns with the designer's commitment to sustainable, earth-friendly knit and crochet design.
Design Philosophy
Created by independent designer Kristen TenDyke under the Caterpillar Knits brand, the Karuna Shrug reflects a commitment to environmentally conscious crafting. The pattern itself is printed with sustainability in mind, encouraging users to print only when necessary, use recycled paper, and print on both sides to help conserve resources.
