Just The Hats, Ma'am by Corrine Walcher

Overview

Just The Hats, Ma'am is a downloadable knitting pattern collection featuring four versatile winter beanie designs. Created by independent designer Corrine Walcher, this pattern set allows knitters to work with yarn from their personal stash by offering the same basic hat design in four different yarn weights: sport, DK, worsted, and bulky. Each hat style is available in three finished sizes, making this collection adaptable to various head circumferences and yarn availability.

What Is Being Made

This pattern collection produces classic winter beanies suitable for everyday wear. The hats are straightforward in construction, designed for knitters who want functional, no-fuss headwear without complex shaping or decorative elements. All four hat variations follow the same basic structure but are calibrated for different yarn weights, allowing crafters to choose based on their available materials rather than being locked into a specific yarn requirement.

Finished Sizes

Each of the four hat designs is offered in three finished circumference options:

  • 20 inches circumference
  • 22 inches circumference
  • 24 inches circumference

All finished sizes feature approximately one to two inches of built-in stretch, providing comfortable fit flexibility across the size range.

Yarn Specifications

The pattern accommodates four distinct yarn weight categories, each with corresponding yardage requirements. Medium-sized hats require the following approximate yardages:

  • Sport weight: 150 yards
  • DK weight: 140 yards
  • Worsted weight: 110 yards
  • Bulky weight: 85 yards

Yardage varies based on both the selected yarn weight and the finished size chosen. This flexible approach enables knitters to work with yarn already in their collection, reducing the need for new yarn purchases.

Needles and Tools

The pattern offers flexibility in needle choice, allowing knitters to use either double-pointed needles or circular needles for construction. Specific needle sizes are calibrated to each yarn weight:

  • Sport weight: Size 3/3.25mm needles
  • DK weight: Size 5/3.75mm needles
  • Worsted weight: Size 7/4.5mm needles
  • Bulky weight: Size 9/5.5mm needles

Circular needles should measure 16 inches in length. The choice between double-pointed needles and circular needles does not affect the final garment, allowing knitters to work with their preferred method.

Gauge and Tension

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished hat size. The pattern provides specific stitch gauge measurements in blocked stockinette stitch for each yarn weight:

  • Sport weight: 6 stitches per inch
  • DK weight: 5 stitches per inch
  • Worsted weight: 4 stitches per inch
  • Bulky weight: 3 stitches per inch

Row gauge is noted as non-critical for this pattern, as finished measurements are provided rather than row counts. This design choice simplifies the knitting process and reduces the need for precise row-by-row gauge matching.

Stitches and Techniques

Just The Hats, Ma'am employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch used throughout is stockinette stitch, the most common knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows. This stitch produces a smooth, classic fabric suitable for winter beanies.

The pattern utilizes circular knitting techniques, worked either on double-pointed needles or circular needles in the round. This construction method eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless hats. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques including casting on, working in the round, managing stitches across multiple needles or a single circular needle, and binding off.

Difficulty Level

This pattern collection is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered fundamental skills but may not yet be ready for complex stitch patterns or advanced sh
