Product Description

The Josephine Shawl is the first pattern in the Josephine Collection. It is named in honor of my mom, who was my teacher, craft partner, encourager and the person who taught me to always choose to create quality products even if that means ripping out 20 rows to fix a mistake! This also taught me perseverance.

This crochet shawl pattern creates a lightweight, lacy shawl that can also be worn as a scarf. Wear it on those slightly cool nights while taking a walk or use it to accessorize the dress you are wearing out to dinner. Wrap it around as a casual scarf with comfortable jeans. There are so many options, and each one will look fabulous!

You may also add or subtract rows to change the size. I made it with Cotton Kings Twirls from Hobbii in a blue colorway (Mom’s favorite color), but it would look beautiful in a solid as well.

In addition, you can use a 3 or 4 weight yarn to make it warmer for the colder weather.

Josephine Shawl by Kimberly Spewak

What Is Being Made

The Josephine Shawl is a lightweight, lacy crochet shawl designed by Kimberly Spewak as the first pattern in the Josephine Collection. This versatile accessory functions as both a shawl and scarf, making it suitable for layering on cool evenings or dressing up casual and formal outfits. The finished dimensions measure approximately 70 inches wide by 30 inches from neck to center point, though crafters can customize the size by adding or subtracting rows according to their preferences.

Versatility and Styling Options

The Josephine Shawl offers multiple wearing styles for different occasions and seasons. Wear it as a lightweight wrap on slightly cool nights during evening walks, drape it elegantly over a dinner dress, or style it casually around the shoulders with comfortable jeans. The lacy construction provides breathability while still offering warmth, making it an adaptable layering piece for transitional weather.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This crochet pattern employs lacy stitch techniques to create an open, delicate fabric structure. The design emphasizes quality construction and precision, reflecting the designer's philosophy of creating well-made pieces. Crafters will develop skills in maintaining consistent tension and executing the lacy pattern repeats that define this shawl's elegant appearance.

Yarn and Materials

The Josephine Shawl is designed for sport weight yarn, creating a lightweight finished fabric. Crafters can customize the warmth level by selecting different yarn weights: sport weight yarn produces the original lightweight version, while substituting 3 or 4 weight yarn creates a warmer garment suitable for cooler seasons. The pattern was originally created in a blue colorway, though it works beautifully in solid colors of any choice.
