King Cole 5912: Jacket, Cardigan and Blanket Knitting Pattern in Beaches DK

King Cole pattern 5912 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern offering three distinct designs for babies and young children: a knitted jacket, a knitted cardigan, and a knitted blanket. Sizes range from 31 cm to 51 cm (12 to 20 inches), making this collection suitable for newborns through to toddlers. Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is ideal for knitters who are comfortable with shaping techniques and working across multiple needle sizes. A donation to the Pink Ribbon Foundation is made for every King Cole pattern purchased.

Yarn and Materials

All three designs are worked in King Cole Beaches DK, a double knitting weight yarn. The pattern specifies 4mm knitting needles as the primary needle size, with 3.25mm knitting needles used for ribbed and garter stitch edgings and borders. Achieving the correct tension is emphasised throughout: 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size up or down if their tension does not match this gauge, as correct tension is essential to achieving the stated finished measurements.

The Jacket

The jacket is a structured, shaped garment designed for babies and toddlers in the size range of 31–51 cm. It is a standout piece in this collection due to its construction method and use of multiple stitch types.

Construction

The jacket is worked in one piece to the armholes, beginning at the Right Front and ending at the Left Front. This seamless-to-armhole construction reduces finishing work and creates a neat, professional result. After the armhole point, the work is divided and each section — fronts and back — is completed separately.

Techniques and Shaping

  • Neck shaping is worked on the right side rows, with stitches slipped and decreased at the neck edge to create a smooth, tapered neckline.
  • Shoulder shaping is included to give the garment a properly fitted finish.
  • Armhole shaping is achieved through decreases worked over multiple rows, with the armhole depth varying by size (7–9 cm depending on the size being made).
  • Make one (M1) increases are used during the body section to add shaping where needed.
  • Stitches are placed on hold (left on the needle) when dividing for armholes, a technique that requires confidence in managing live stitches.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (St-St): the main body fabric, worked by knitting right side rows and purling wrong side rows.
  • Garter stitch (G-St): every row knitted, used for borders and edgings to create a flat, non-curling edge.
  • 1x1 Rib: alternating knit one, purl one stitches, used for neat, stretchy trims.
  • K2tog (knit two together): a right-leaning decrease used in armhole and neck shaping.
  • P2tog (purl two together): a decrease worked on wrong side rows during shaping.
  • Sl1, psso (slip one, pass slipped stitch over): a left-leaning decrease used in shaping sequences.
  • M1 (make one): an increase worked by picking up the loop between stitches and working into the back of it to avoid a hole.
  • Tbl (through back of loop): used in conjunction with certain increases and decreases to twist the stitch and prevent gaps.

Edgings and Borders

The jacket opens with 13 rows of garter stitch worked on 3.25mm needles to form a firm, flat lower border. Front bands and neckbands are similarly finished with garter stitch or rib to maintain structure and prevent rolling.
