Product Description
This trio of Itty Bitty Birdies can be found in your own backyard (as long as your back yard is an exotic arboretum). Their three inch bodies are knit in the round with minimal finishing and their hind ends can be adorned with your choice of tail feathers. The Peacock's tail has beads and a twisted stitch pattern (so very fancy). Pictured legs are crochet, but the pattern also contains instructions for i- cord legs. Birdies are such a quick knit, you'll have a flock before you know it.
This pattern is $1.99 at KnitPicks. It is for sale here because it's nice to have things in your Ravelry library and pay with PayPal. But I have to pay when you use PayPal, so the Ravelry price is higher to compensate.
Itty Bitty Birdies (Fancy Pants) Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
Itty Bitty Birdies (Fancy Pants) is a downloadable knitting pattern for creating small decorative toy birds. Designed by YarnMiracle, this pattern produces finished birdies measuring almost 7 inches in length including legs. The pattern includes instructions for three distinct bird variations: Cardinal, Robin, and Peacock, each with their own color specifications and yardage requirements.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses double pointed needles (DPNs) to create the three-dimensional bird body in the round. The pattern employs the knit cast-on technique to begin the project. Knitters will work with stitch distributions across four double pointed needles, with specific stitch counts provided in a clear notation system (for example, "2-3-2" indicates 2 stitches on needle #1, 3 stitches on needle #2, and 2 stitches on needle #3).
The pattern offers flexibility in leg construction. While the pictured birdies feature crochet legs, complete instructions for creating knit i-cord legs are also included as an alternative technique. This allows knitters to choose their preferred method based on skill level and available tools.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate crafters. Knitters will work in the round using basic stockinette stitch construction. The pattern includes references to unfamiliar techniques with links to video tutorials available at yarnmiracle.com/techniques, making it accessible to knitters who may need guidance on specific stitches or methods.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and is worked on US Size 3 double pointed needles. The recommended yarn is Simply Cotton Worsted. Yardage requirements vary by bird design:
- Cardinal: 13g main color (23 yards) in Carnelian Heather, plus 4g contrast color (7 yards) in Golden Heather for legs and beak
- Robin: 13g main color (23 yards) in Toffee, plus 1g contrast color (2 yards) in Carnelian Heather for legs and beak
- Peacock: 8g main color (15 yards) in Bermuda Heather, plus 6g contrast color (11 yards) in Limeade Heather for tail, and additional Mandarin Heather for legs and beak
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches to an inch when working with worsted weight yarn. However, the pattern notes that gauge flexibility is acceptable for this toy project, as long as the resulting fabric is not too loose. Knitters are advised to stretch their work and check for holes rather than obsessing over exact gauge measurements. The finished birdies measure approximately 3.25 inches for the body, with an overall length of nearly 7 inches when legs are included.
Pattern Format
Itty Bitty Birdies (Fancy Pants) is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern includes comprehensive notes on materials, gauge, and technique references to support knitters throughout the project.
