Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Tim Moniker Chart - Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a charted design (Tim Moniker Chart) that is worked into the fabric during knitting. The sweater is constructed with a back and front panel, shaped armholes, and ribbed edging, making it a classic pullover-style jumper suitable for children.
Knitting Techniques Used
Intarsia: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia knitting, which allows for the incorporation of a detailed chart design (the Tim Moniker Chart) into the sweater. Intarsia involves working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections, creating a picture or pattern across the garment without carrying yarn across the back.
Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch throughout, which creates a smooth, flat fabric with a knit appearance on the right side and a purl appearance on the wrong side. This stitch is ideal for displaying intarsia designs clearly.
Ribbing: The sweater incorporates 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 ribbing) at the cuffs and edges. This elastic ribbing helps the sweater fit snugly and prevents curling at the edges.
Shaping: The pattern includes armhole shaping achieved through decreasing stitches at each end of rows, creating a fitted garment that sits properly on a child's body.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of stockinette stitch
- Purl (P): Used in ribbing and stockinette stitch construction
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
- 2x2 Rib: Alternating knit 2 and purl 2 stitches in rows to create elastic edging
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, allowing for proper gauge and fabric consistency.
The sweater is provided in multiple sizes with varying stitch counts and row lengths to accommodate different children's measurements. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle sizes.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While stockinette stitch and ribbing are fundamental techniques, the intarsia method requires careful attention to color changes and chart reading, making this project suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic skills.
