Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Rodney Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is constructed with a classic sweater structure including a back piece, front piece with intarsia chart integration, and sleeve components. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements, making it a versatile project for creating personalized knitwear with custom moniker or name details.
Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, a method of incorporating multiple colors into knitted fabric by working separate color sections with individual yarn lengths or bobbins. This technique creates a smooth, flat fabric with color changes, unlike stranded colorwork which carries yarn across the back.
Ribbed Edging: The sweater begins with 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2 repeat pattern), which provides elasticity and a finished appearance at the cuffs and hem. The ribbing is worked over multiple rows to create a professional edge.
Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole shaping achieved through strategic decreases at the beginning of rows, creating a fitted sleeve cap and proper garment proportions.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric stitch throughout the sweater body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance with V-shaped columns on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-over-2 pattern for elastic edges
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and achieving proper fit
- Knit Stitches: Basic knit stitches throughout for stockinette construction
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight worsted-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork details.
Needles: The pattern uses two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. This needle size variation creates the necessary tension difference between the elastic ribbing and the main fabric.
Tension Consideration: The yarn amounts specified in the pattern are based on achieving the correct gauge (tension) as specified in the original pattern instructions. Maintaining proper tension is critical for accurate sizing and successful intarsia colorwork integration.
Pattern Structure
The sweater is worked in pieces with separate front and back sections. The back piece is cast on with 70 stitches and worked through multiple rows before armhole shaping. The front piece incorporates the intarsia chart, with the moniker or name design integrated into the stockinette fabric. Multiple size options are provided throughout the pattern, indicated by bracketed measurements such as [25:29:29:33], allowing customization for different age groups and fit preferences.
Difficulty Level: Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires knitters to be comfortable with basic shaping techniques, reading charts for intarsia placement, and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously. Prior experience with colorwork and garment construction is recommended.
