Intarsia Present Chart Children's Sweater
What Is Being Made
This is a children's pullover sweater featuring an intarsia present chart design. The garment is available in six size options ranging from age 2-3 years through 12-13 years, with chest measurements from 61cm to 85cm. The sweater includes adjustable sleeve lengths and is designed as a classic crew-neck pullover suitable for everyday wear.
Intarsia Technique Overview
Intarsia is an advanced colorwork knitting method that creates detailed pictorial designs by using separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections of the pattern. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia does not carry yarn across the back of the work, resulting in a single-layer fabric with no floats. This technique is ideal for large design areas and produces a cleaner, less bulky finished garment. The present chart design in this sweater showcases how intarsia can bring festive imagery to life in knitted form.
Stitches and Construction
The sweater is worked primarily in stocking stitch, which creates the smooth, classic V-shaped texture characteristic of knit fabrics. Stocking stitch is the foundation for intarsia work, as it provides an even canvas for the colorwork pattern. The garment is constructed using standard sweater shaping techniques with ribbed edges to provide structure and prevent curling.
Materials Required
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in a main shade, with yardage based on Stylecraft Special DK (295m per 100g). Quantities range from 2 balls for the smallest size (age 2-3) to 4 balls for larger sizes (ages 10-13). Additional oddments of contrast shades are required for the intarsia present chart design.
- Needles: 1 pair of 4mm (UK8/USA6) knitting needles for main fabric and 1 pair of 3¼mm (UK10/USA3) needles for ribbing
- Notions: 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction
Tension and Gauge
The pattern requires a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit across all size ranges. Knitters should check their tension swatch before beginning and adjust needle size accordingly—using thinner needles if achieving fewer stitches or thicker needles if achieving more stitches than specified.
Sizing Information
The sweater pattern provides six graduated sizes with corresponding measurements:
- Age 2-3 years: To fit 61cm chest, actual measurement 65cm, full length approximately 38cm
- Age 4-5 years: To fit 65cm chest, actual measurement 69cm, full length approximately 42cm

Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the skills required to execute intarsia colorwork successfully. Knitters should be comfortable with basic garment construction, tension control, and the specific techniques involved in managing multiple yarn colors within a single row of knitting.
