Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Nicky Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring an intarsia design element, specifically a personalized name chart (Nicky Moniker). The garment is constructed as a classic pullover sweater with separate front and back pieces, designed to fit multiple size ranges for growing children.
Craft and Primary Technique
Knitting is the primary craft used to create this sweater. The pattern employs intarsia as the key decorative technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors to create a personalized motif. Intarsia allows for detailed, picture-like designs to be incorporated into the fabric by carrying different colored yarns and switching between them at designated points, rather than stranding colors across the back of the work.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The sweater is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (st-st) throughout the main body, which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying the intarsia design clearly. The ribbed sections use 2x2 rib (alternating knit 2, purl 2), which appears at the cuffs and hem to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
Construction details include:
- Back and front pieces worked separately from cast-on through armhole shaping
- Armhole shaping accomplished through decreases worked at the beginning of rows (1 stitch decreased at each end of every row for multiple rows)
- Thumb method used for the initial cast-on
- Stitch holder used to hold stitches in progress during construction
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) decreases incorporated into patterned rows for shaping
Materials and Tools
The pattern specifies 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. Two needle sizes are required: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The pattern provides specific yarn amounts based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn.
Difficulty Level and Sizing
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the skills required to work intarsia colorwork while managing shaping and multiple pattern rows. The design includes multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements, with row counts and stitch numbers varying across sizes (indicated by bracketed figures such as [25:29:29:33] representing different size options).
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Instarsia, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The pattern includes detailed row-by-row instructions, armhole shaping specifications, and measurements provided in both metric and imperial units (centimeters and inches).
