Product Description
Inspired by a night when I couldn't fall asleep and needed something to knit to calm my nerves, this sock was born. The socks, when finished, will look like you were up all night and got dressed while half asleep...the second sock is the inside out version of the first. A quick and easy knit, using sport weight yarn, this sock combines knits, purls, and simple yo/dec combos to make a sock that is easy but not boring. A solid/semi-solid will show off the pattern, while, to quote Girlymom, "it shows a strong colourway who's boss".
Currently available in two sizes: 8" and 9". Between the two patterns and a variety of different gauges, you should be able to make these socks any size you'd like.

Insomnia Socks by Allison Janocha
What is Being Made
Insomnia is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Allison Janocha. These socks feature a creative asymmetrical design where one sock is knitted as the inside-out version of the other, creating a playful mismatched effect. The pattern offers two finished sizes: Small with an 8-inch foot circumference and Large with a 9-inch foot circumference, making them suitable for a range of foot sizes.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Insomnia socks are constructed using advanced knitting techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The pattern is written to accommodate multiple needle methods, allowing knitters to choose their preferred sock construction approach. The pattern supports knitting with two needles using either the Magic Loop technique or two circular needles. Magic Loop is a method where a single long circular needle is used to knit small circumferences by creating a loop, while two circulars involves using two separate circular needles simultaneously. Knitters may also adapt the pattern to use their favorite alternative method for sock construction.
The socks are worked from the cuff down and finished with a grafted toe using the Kitchener stitch, a seamless joining technique that creates an invisible seam. This grafting method requires a tapestry needle for weaving the live stitches together and for weaving in yarn ends throughout the project.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch patterns are detailed within the complete instructions, the Insomnia socks employ fundamental knitting stitches combined in a simple but visually interesting construction. The pattern is described as simple but not boring, suggesting the use of basic knit and purl stitches arranged in a way that creates visual interest without excessive complexity. Stitch markers are required during construction to help track pattern repeats and the transition between different sections of the sock.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Insomnia socks require sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating fitted, comfortable socks. The pattern calls for 1 to 2 skeins of sport weight sock yarn, with approximately 320 yards being sufficient for most sizes. Knitters with wider or longer feet should plan for additional yardage beyond the standard recommendation.
Knitting needles required are US 1.5 (2.5 mm) or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Gauge—the number of stitches and rows per inch—is essential for proper fit, and knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their needle size produces the correct measurements. Additional notions include at least one stitch marker, though having multiple markers is helpful for tracking pattern sections, a tapestry needle for grafting the toe and weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is an advanced-level knitting pattern presented as a downloadable PDF. The complete instructions for Small socks appear on pages 2-3, while Large sock instructions are found on pages 4-5. The pattern is designed to be printer-friendly, allowing knitters to print only the pages they need to save ink and paper. The advanced difficulty rating reflects the expectation that knitters have solid foundational skills including working in the round, understanding gauge, and executing techniques like the Kitchener stitch for grafting.
