Product Description
This crochet pattern is for a hooded infinity shawl and scarf combination. Wear the hood up or down, wrap the scarf around your neck or wear it loose.
The pattern is for the complete hooded scarf/shawl. The hood is shaped, not just draped over. The hood is made in two pieces and the scarf is a third separate piece. They are then sewn together and have borders added to make one striking accessory.
The recommended yarn is a soft acrylic to make the hood feel snug and warm. The instructions include lots of detail to ensure complex shaping is made easy. I have listed this pattern as "Intermediate" because of the pattern techniques.

Infinity Hooded Shawl by SeyhallCrochetDesign
What Is Being Made
The Infinity Hooded Shawl is a one-size crochet garment that combines a traditional infinity shawl with an integrated hood. This versatile accessory wraps around the shoulders and neck, with the hood feature providing additional warmth and coverage. The design creates a cozy, layered look suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several foundational and intermediate techniques to create its structure and drape. The pattern utilizes chain stitches to establish the foundation and turning chains throughout the work. Single crochet stitches provide dense, structured sections, while half double crochet and double crochet stitches create lighter, more flowing areas that contribute to the shawl's elegant drape. The pattern incorporates decrease stitches in the form of single crochet two together and double crochet three together, which shape the garment and create tailored edges. Slip stitches join rounds and secure sections seamlessly. The use of stitch markers helps track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout the project.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Infinity Hooded Shawl pattern uses the following crochet stitches and standard US crochet terminology:
- ch – chain stitch, the foundation of all crochet work
- sc – single crochet, a short, tight stitch
- hdc – half double crochet, a medium-height stitch
- dc – double crochet, a tall stitch that creates openness and flow
- sc2tog – single crochet two together, a decrease that combines two stitches into one
- dc3tog – double crochet three together, a decrease combining three stitches into one
- begdc3tog – beginning double crochet three together, a special decrease stitch worked at the start of a row or round
- sl st – slip stitch, used to join rounds and move yarn across stitches without adding height
- yo – yarn over, the action of wrapping yarn around the hook
- sk – skip, passing over a stitch without working into it
- st – stitch
- rpt – repeat, indicating pattern sequences worked multiple times
- spc – space, typically referring to gaps created by chain stitches
Materials and Equipment
The Infinity Hooded Shawl is designed to be worked with aran weight yarn, which provides excellent drape and structure for this type of garment. The pattern calls for three coordinating colors from the Caron Simply Soft yarn line:
- Colour 1 (Cream) – Caron Simply Soft in Off White #9702, requiring 3 skeins totaling 6 oz / 170g
- Colour 2 (Grey) – Caron Simply Soft Tweeds in Grey Heather #294023, requiring 2 skeins totaling 5 oz / 141g and 240 yards / 219 meters
- Colour 3 (Brown) – Caron Simply Soft in Taupe #9783, requiring 1 skein totaling 315 yards / 288 meters
The project requires a 5.5 mm crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for aran weight yarn and creates balanced stitches. A large eye needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends and seaming sections together. Stitch markers help track your place in pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project.
