Product Description
This beautiful butterfly combines illusion knitting with mitred knitting.
The clever construction creates a mitred triangle with a line of symmetry for the patterning on the wing. This is only half the butterfly as the second half is added by picking up stitches and adding another identical triangle. You can see all of the butterfly when you spread it out but it becomes much more ephemeral when you are wearing it. As you move around different parts come in and out of view.
The shawl in the photos used approximately 440 yards (400m) in each of two contrasting DK yarns with extra required for the border. It measures approximately 56” (140 cm) across, excluding the border. Using different yarn would make it bigger or small.
This is not much more difficult to make than our other illusion designs. The charting is slightly different from our usual charts. Familiarise yourself with our methods before you try this one. We have lots of samples you can try.
Illusive Butterfly Shawl by Steve Plummer & Pat Ashforth
What Is Being Made
The Illusive Butterfly is an intermediate-level knitted shawl that combines illusion knitting techniques with mitred square construction to create a butterfly-shaped design. This downloadable PDF pattern from Woolly Thoughts produces a finished shawl measuring approximately 140 cm (56 inches) in width and 70 cm (28 inches) in depth, excluding the edging.
Illusion Knitting Technique
This shawl showcases illusion knitting, a specialized technique where strategic color changes and stitch placement create optical illusions that reveal hidden images or patterns when the fabric is viewed from certain angles or under specific lighting conditions. In the Illusive Butterfly design, this technique is skillfully merged with mitred square construction to produce the butterfly motif that gives the shawl its name.
Mitred Squares Construction
Mitred squares are a classic knitting method where individual square sections are created with diagonal decreases that form neat corner points. These squares are then joined together to build the larger shawl structure. This modular approach allows for precise pattern control and makes the illusion effect possible through careful color placement within and between the squares.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern utilizes garter stitch as the foundation for the gauge calculations and primary fabric structure. Garter stitch—created by knitting every row—produces a textured, reversible fabric that works particularly well for illusion knitting effects. The mitred square construction involves strategic decreases to form the diagonal lines that define each square's corners.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knitting) yarn is recommended, though any yarn weight can be substituted to adjust the finished size of the shawl
- Yarn Quantity: Approximately 400 metres (440 yards) in each of two colors for the main shawl body, plus an additional 150 metres (170 yards) in dark color and 30 metres (33 yards) in light color for the edging
- Color Palette: The sample shown uses Graphite and Citron, a sophisticated combination of dark and bright hues that enhance the illusion effect
- Needles: 3.5 mm needles are recommended for the DK yarn version, sized smaller than typical to create a tight, controlled fabric that allows the illusion pattern to read clearly without compromising drape
- Needle Type: A long circular needle is required due to the substantial number of stitches involved in the shawl construction
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern works to a gauge of 5 stitches per inch measured over garter stitch. The designer notes that using thicker yarn will produce a larger finished shawl, while thinner yarn will create a smaller version. The tight gauge achieved with smaller needles is intentional—it ensures the illusion knitting effect displays clearly while maintaining the shawl's ability to drape elegantly.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. Understanding of illusion knitting principles and mitred square construction is beneficial, making this an excellent project for expanding technical knowledge while creating a stunning wearable art piece.
