The Illusion Blanket was inspired by the need for an extra blanket for my son's new bed for the winter season. Stripes and squares just didn't seem to fit him, so I came up with this. The pattern is for a blanket 58" x 78", which fits a twin bed nicely. You will need to know how to do fsc(foundation sc), as well as other basic crochet stitches. You will need a 6.00mm hook and approximately 28 ozs worsted weight yarn in blue and white and 30 ozs worsted weight yarn in black (or colors of choice). The pattern includes lots of pictures to help you along the way. Illusion shapes are sewn together.
As always, feel free to PM with any questions or if you need any help. Happy crocheting!
The Illusion Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create a striking visual effect through the strategic arrangement of modular illusion shapes. This downloadable PDF pattern from Little Squirrel Designs provides instructions for constructing a blanket measuring 58 inches by 78 inches, though the design is adaptable to different dimensions by adjusting the quantity of illusion shapes incorporated into the final piece.
This blanket employs a modular construction technique, where individual illusion shapes are crocheted separately and then assembled together. The pattern requires creating 135 individual illusion shapes that are subsequently sewn together to form the complete blanket. This approach allows crafters to work on manageable components before joining them into the finished throw, making it suitable for intermediate crocheters who are comfortable with multi-piece projects and assembly techniques.
The Illusion Blanket pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches executed with precision to achieve its distinctive optical effect. The primary stitches employed include:
The pattern demonstrates how careful placement of decreases and skipped stitches across multiple rows creates the optical illusion effect that gives this blanket its distinctive character. Each illusion shape is worked in rows with strategic shaping that gradually reduces the stitch count while maintaining the visual pattern.
The Illusion Blanket pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in a three-color palette:
Additional materials include a 6.0mm crochet hook and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling the pieces. The pattern recommends leaving approximately 18-inch tails on each completed illusion shape to facilitate sewing the pieces together before final weaving in of all ends. This preparation ensures secure assembly while maintaining the blanket's structural integrity.
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, the Illusion Blanket is best suited for crocheters with foundational skills in single crochet, decreases, and basic shaping techniques. The intermediate designation reflects both the repetitive nature of creating 135 individual shapes and the assembly process required to join them into the finished blanket. Crafters comfortable with following row-by-row instructions and managing multiple yarn colors will find this project achievable and rewarding.
