Ilkley Shawl by Laura Chau
What Is Being Made
The Ilkley Shawl is a triangular knit shawl designed by Laura Chau, available in two distinct sizes to suit different preferences. The smaller version is a scarf measuring 48 inches (122 centimeters) across the top with a depth of 19 inches (48 centimeters) at the centre back. The larger version is a full shawl measuring 60 inches (152 centimeters) across the top with a depth of 25 inches (64 centimeters) at the centre back. This versatile accessory works beautifully in both solid two-colour colorways and multi-colour ombre variations, making it suitable for various yarn stash utilization projects.
Construction Method
The Ilkley Shawl employs a bottom-up knitting construction, which offers a practical advantage over traditional top-down shawl patterns. Knitters begin with a large number of stitches at the base and work decreases throughout the project, eliminating the tedious task of casting off hundreds of stitches at completion. This thoughtful design approach makes the finishing process quick and satisfying.
Stitch Pattern and Texture
The Ilkley features a non-lacy stitch pattern that creates a fabric with appealing textural qualities. The pattern produces a cushy yet airy fabric that is comfortable and breathable without requiring complex lace techniques. The straightforward stitch pattern is accessible and easy to work, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters who want to create a sophisticated finished piece without wrestling with intricate stitch sequences.
Techniques Used
- Bottom-up triangular shawl construction
- Strategic decrease shaping throughout the pattern
- Multi-colour knitting capability for ombre effects

The pattern's generous sizing in both scarf and shawl versions means knitters can create a substantial finished piece even from limited yardage, making it ideal for stash busting and utilizing precious yarn remnants.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping and colour work without the complexity of lace patterns.
