An intermediate knit, it starts at the top, spreading out into a semi-circle, with 2 different, easy lace stitches, and garter stitch stripes. Ice Princess Shawl - Child Size (3-8 Years)
What Is Being Made
The Ice Princess Shawl is a child-sized triangular shawl designed by Heather Corcoran of The Lonely Sea, created to fit children approximately 3 to 8 years old. This knitted shawl offers two distinct construction options: a two-colour version featuring contrasting yarns for visual interest, or a single-colour version for a more streamlined aesthetic. The finished shawl measures approximately 76cm (30 inches) in width and 38cm (15 inches) in depth from the centre top to the outer edge, making it an appropriately scaled accessory for young wearers.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project employs shawl construction techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills and some experience. The pattern includes instructions for customizing the finished dimensions, allowing crafters to add approximately 3cm (1.25 inches) to the depth and 6cm (2.5 inches) to the width without requiring additional yarn. This flexibility makes the pattern adaptable to individual preferences or fit requirements. The shawl is worked in sections, with the pattern containing at least seven distinct sections that build the triangular shape characteristic of classic shawl design.
Stitches and Knitting Methods
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the Ice Princess Shawl utilizes knitting stitches appropriate for chunky and bulky weight yarns. The sectional construction method allows for manageable working segments, making the intermediate difficulty level accessible to knitters who have progressed beyond basic techniques but may not yet be ready for highly complex stitch patterns or advanced shaping.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ice Princess Shawl pattern offers flexibility in yarn selection depending on the chosen colourway:
- Two-Colour Version: Requires Stylecraft Special Chunky yarn (144m/157 yards per 100g ball) in White 1001 and Cloud Blue 1019, one ball of each; King Cole Cosmos thread in Starburst 1100 (25g ball); and Stylecraft Eskimo Double Knitting in Winter White 5006 (50g ball)
- Single-Colour Version: Requires two 100g balls of Stylecraft Special Chunky in White 1001
The pattern accommodates both chunky and bulky weight yarns, providing options for crafters with different yarn preferences or stash availability. The use of chunky-weight yarn allows for relatively quick project completion while maintaining clear stitch definition. The inclusion of a finer double knitting option and decorative cosmos thread in the two-colour version demonstrates the designer's versatility in yarn selection, enabling customization of the final aesthetic.
Project Classification
This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Heather Corcoran falls within the categories of shawls, scarves, and blankets/throws, making it a versatile accessory project suitable for gift-giving or personal use. The intermediate difficulty rating and child-specific sizing make it an excellent project for knitters seeking to expand their skills while creating practical, wearable items for younger recipients.
