HüttenGaudi Men's Felted Slippers by Olga Beckmann

What Is Being Made

HüttenGaudi Men's felted slippers are cozy footwear designed to fit men's shoe sizes Europe 42-43 and 44-45 (UK 7½–8 and 9½–10½; USA & Canada 8½–9 and 10½–11½). The slippers feature two size options with foot lengths of 10¼–10½ inches (26–27 cm) for Medium and 10¾–11 inches (27–28 cm) for Large. These are hand-felted slippers that combine knitting and felting techniques to create warm, durable footwear.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The slippers are constructed using a combination of knitting methods and hand-felting. The designer knits the edging stripe, heel flap, and heel turn using a 24-inch circular needle, then switches to double-pointed needles to work the sole and toe sections. The pattern incorporates stockinette stitch and garter stitch elements throughout the construction.

Hand-felting is a key technique in this project. The pattern notes recommend that knitters new to felting slippers first create sample swatches in both stockinette and garter stitch, check gauge on these samples, and felt them by hand before committing to the full project. This preparatory step ensures success with the felting process and helps knitters understand how their specific yarn will behave when felted.

Yarn and Materials

The primary yarn used is Ístex Álafoss Lopi, a 100% wool yarn in bulky or 12-ply weight. Each skein contains 109 yards (100 meters) and weighs 100 grams (3.53 ounces). The project requires 3 skeins of this yarn. The yarn must be suitable for felting—specifically, it should be 100% wool that is not labeled "superwash," as superwash-treated wool will not felt properly.

An alternative yarn option is Ístex Plötulopi, an unspun Icelandic wool in worsted or 10-ply weight, which offers different felting characteristics.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for a 24-inch circular needle for working the edging stripe, heel flap, and heel turn. Double-pointed needles are used for working the sole and toe sections after the initial construction phases. Additional tools needed include supplies for hand-felting your completed knitted pieces.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. However, familiarity with basic knitting stitches and the willingness to learn hand-felting techniques is expected.
