Product Description

This pattern was inspired by the smaller version of this blanket, the Hudson’s Bay Inspired Baby Blanket. It uses two different knitting techniques: Garter Stitch and Stockinette stitch. I wanted to give this blanket a little more texture than its baby blanket counterpart and I was so happy with the result.

Project Overview

The Hudson's Bay Inspired Afghan is a beginner-friendly knitted blanket and throw designed by Knits By Brit. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a large, textured blanket measuring 5 feet by 4.5 feet, making it an ideal project for crafters looking to complete a substantial home décor piece. The design draws inspiration from traditional Hudson's Bay blanket aesthetics while incorporating accessible knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a full-sized afghan blanket intended as a throw for home use. The finished piece measures 5 feet wide by 4.5 feet in length, providing generous coverage for a bed, couch, or chair. The blanket features a distinctive color-blocked design inspired by the iconic Hudson's Bay blanket style, combining multiple yarn colors in a structured pattern.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Hudson's Bay Inspired Afghan employs two fundamental knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:

  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this technique produces a textured, bumpy fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is one of the most basic and forgiving knitting stitches, making it ideal for beginners.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Formed by alternating knit rows and purl rows, stockinette stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric with a characteristic V-pattern appearance on the knit side. This stitch provides contrast to the garter stitch sections throughout the blanket.

The combination of these two stitches gives the afghan more texture and visual depth compared to simpler blanket designs, while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters.

Stitches and Construction

The pattern begins with a cast-on of 100 stitches using the Long Tail cast-on method, though knitters are encouraged to use any cast-on method with which they are comfortable. The pattern incorporates garter stitch and stockinette stitch sections throughout the design to create the Hudson's Bay-inspired aesthetic with color blocking.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The project uses super bulky weight yarn (Weight 6), which allows for faster project completion and creates a substantial, cozy blanket. The pattern is pictured using Bernat Blanket Yarn in the following colors and quantities:

  • Vintage White: 3 big balls
  • Lapis: 1 small ball
  • School Bus Yellow: 1 small ball
  • Racecar Red: 1 small ball
  • Malachite: 1 small ball

Tools Required: Knitters will need US 11 circular needles measuring 24 inches in length, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches by 14 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch swatch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the blanket to reach its intended finished measurements of 5 feet by 4.5 feet. Knitters should always work a gauge swatch before beginning the main project to ensure accurate sizing.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are new to the craft or those looking for a straightforward, satisfying project. The use of basic stitches and super bulky yarn makes the work progress quickly and remain manageable throughout the knitting process.
