Product Description
The double layers of this two colour slipped stitch headband makes it the perfect stylish accessory for cold weather. The combination of on trend, vintage aesthetic with on trend, old fashioned practicality, makes it the headband you’ll return to year after year.
The incredibly simple, one colour at a time, slipped stitch pattern makes it perfect meditative or tv or queue knitting.
Combine a gradient, variegated yarn or even a parade of leftovers with a workhorse solid to striking effect.
The headband starts with a provisional cast on and is finished by using kitchener stitch to graft the live sts from the cast on to the final row of knit sts. Alternatively, you can cast on and off as usual and neatly sew the two ends of your knitting together.
Full, step by step, instructions for both the crochet provisional cast on and Kitchener Stitch graft are provided on the ‘Techniques’ page of the pattern.

Houndstooth Headband by Tess Young
Project Overview
The Houndstooth Headband is a knitted two-color headband designed by Tess Young that combines vintage aesthetic with practical cold-weather functionality. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a double-layered accessory featuring a classic houndstooth visual effect, making it an ideal year-round project for knitters seeking both style and warmth.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a finished headband that wraps around the head for warmth and style. The double-layer construction provides insulation and durability, while the two-color slipped stitch pattern creates the distinctive houndstooth appearance. The headband is designed to be a versatile accessory suitable for repeated wear across seasons.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Houndstooth Headband employs several key knitting techniques:
- Slipped Stitch Pattern: A two-color slipped stitch technique forms the foundation of this design. This method involves working with one color at a time, making it an exceptionally meditative knitting experience. The slipped stitches are always worked purlwise to maintain consistency and create clean stitch definition.
- Provisional Cast On: The pattern begins with a provisional cast on, which allows for later grafting. Spare needles in matching size are used to pick up the provisional cast-on stitches, enabling the creation of the double-layer structure through grafting techniques.
- Circular or Double-Pointed Needle Construction: The small circumference of the headband is worked using either double-pointed needles or a preferred circular needle, both in 2.75 mm (US 2) size. This construction method is essential for creating the tubular, fitted shape required for headwear.
- Grafting: The pattern incorporates grafting to join sections together, creating the seamless double-layer finish that characterizes this design.
Stitches Used
The Houndstooth Headband utilizes fundamental knitting stitches:
- Knit Stitch (k): The primary stitch forming the base fabric of the headband.
- Slipped Stitch (s): Worked purlwise, slipped stitches create the two-color houndstooth pattern and are worked one color at a time for simplicity.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn, offering versatility in color selection and yarn choice. The design accommodates various yarn combinations:
- A solid, reliable workhorse yarn paired with a gradient or variegated yarn for striking visual contrast
- Multiple leftover yarns combined with a solid color for creative stash-busting
- Two complementary solid colors for a classic houndstooth effect
Tools and Equipment
The following needles and supplies are required:
- 2.75 mm (US 2) Double-Pointed Needles or Circular Needle: The primary tool for working the small circumference required for headwear. Knitters may substitute their preferred needle size to achieve proper gauge.
- 2 Spare Needles: Matching 2.75 mm size needles are necessary for picking up provisional cast-on stitches in preparation for grafting.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Houndstooth Headband is accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward one-color-at-a-time slipped stitch pattern eliminates the complexity of managing multiple colors simultaneously, making it ideal for meditative, relaxing knitting sessions.
Design Characteristics
The pattern balances on-trend vintage aesthetic with old-fashioned practicality, creating a timeless accessory. The double-layer construction provides both visual interest and functional warmth, while the houndstooth pattern offers classic appeal that transcends seasonal fashion trends. This headband is designed to become a go-to accessory that knitters will reach for repeatedly throughout the year.
