Horta Shawl by SambaKnits

What Is Being Made

The Horta Shawl is a top-down triangular shawl designed to be worked flat, featuring a generous wingspan of 190 centimeters (74 inches) and a depth of 90 centimeters (36 inches). This is a relaxing, fast-growing project that combines multiple stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture throughout the piece.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level shawl pattern employs several distinct knitting techniques to build its structure and visual appeal:

  • Top-down construction: The shawl is worked from the top downward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it grows and adjust the final size if desired
  • Garter stripe sections: Horizontal stripes of garter stitch provide texture and create visual breaks throughout the design
  • Brioche knitting: Simple brioche stitch sections add a luxurious, elastic quality to portions of the shawl
  • Chevron edging: A chevron pattern forms the decorative edge, creating a dynamic pointed or scalloped finish
  • Yarn overs for shaping: Strategic yarn overs are worked just after the first marker and before the last marker on every right side row to create the triangular shape; these stitches are deliberately dropped on the following row and do not factor into the stitch count
  • I-cord bind-off: The pattern finishes with an i-cord bind-off, which requires a significant amount of yarn and creates a neat, finished edge

Stitches Used

The Horta Shawl incorporates the following stitches:

  • Garter stitch (knit every row)
  • Brioche stitch (simple version)
  • Yarn overs
  • Chevron stitch pattern
  • I-cord bind-off

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 810 meters (880 yards) total across two colors. The yardage breaks down evenly, with 405 meters (440 yards) of each color. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Anzula Lucero DK, which features an 80% fiber content blend.

Yarn considerations: Knitters should note that the i-cord bind-off consumes a considerable amount of yarn. If working with limited yardage or preferring to use every last bit of yarn, the pattern can be modified by extending the final section rather than completing the bind-off as written. Additionally, if bind-off stitches tend to be tighter than the main fabric, consider using a needle one size larger for the bind-off rows to maintain consistent gauge and elasticity.

Pattern Difficulty and Characteristics

Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Horta Shawl is described as fun and easy to work, making it accessible to knitters with some experience. The combination of straightforward stitches and the relaxing nature of the construction means the shawl grows quickly, providing satisfying progress throughout the project. The pattern notes ensure that knitters understand the intentional yarn overs and their role in shaping, helping avoid confusion during the knitting process.
