Product Description

This cardigan is worked from the top down with a simple cable look (no cable needle required), running down the front and around the yoke. There is just enough detail to keep your interest when knitting, and would make a great cardi to pop on for that special outing. Pattern comes with 2 versions for knitting the Sleeves -- Version 1, knitted in the round, or Version 2, knitted flat. This has been graded as suitable for the Intermediate knitter.

What is Being Made

The Honey Pot Cardigan is a buttoned cardigan designed for infants and young children, available in five size options ranging from newborn (0-6 months) through early childhood (6-7 years). This knitted cardigan features a classic construction with front button closure and is designed to provide a comfortable, well-fitted garment for babies and toddlers.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern includes the following size options with corresponding front lengths and actual chest circumferences when buttoned:

  • Size A (0-6 months): Front length 28 cm (11 in), chest circumference 46 cm (18½ in), upper arm circumference 16 cm (6½ in)
  • Size B (12 months): Front length 30 cm (11¾ in), chest circumference 51.5 cm (20½ in), upper arm circumference 17.5 cm (7 in)
  • Size C (2-3 years): Front length 35 cm (13¾ in), chest circumference 61.5 cm (24½ in), upper arm circumference 22 cm (8¾ in)
  • Size D (4-5 years): Front length 37.5 cm (14¾ in), chest circumference 67 cm (26¾ in), upper arm circumference 23.5 cm (9½ in)
  • Size E (6-7 years): Front length 40 cm (15¾ in), chest circumference 68.5 cm (27½ in), upper arm circumference 23.5 cm (9½ in)

Techniques and Stitches

The Honey Pot Cardigan is worked primarily in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side and horizontal bumps on the reverse. This intermediate-level project requires competency in basic knitting techniques and garment construction, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond beginner level.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern uses Drops Merino Extra Fine yarn in Colour 38, a fine-weight yarn (DK weight) that provides excellent drape and softness for delicate baby garments. The yarn is worked on 4 mm (US 6 / UK 8) needles.

Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Size A requires 125 grams (265 metres / 290 yards)
  • Size B requires 160 grams (335 metres)

Gauge/Tension: The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 10 cm (4 in) when worked in stocking stitch on the recommended needle size. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all five size options.

Design Details

The cardigan features a buttoned front closure, making it practical for dressing infants and young children. The construction accommodates growth across multiple years, with proportional sizing that adjusts sleeve circumference, body width, and garment length appropriately for each developmental stage.
