Hestia Crochet Wrap by Julie Blagojevich

What Is Being Made

Hestia is a light crochet wrap with a scalene geometric shape, designed as a versatile layering piece. The wrap begins with a minimal number of stitches at one corner and gradually expands in both length and width as you progress through the pattern. A decorative lotus flower edging is added after the main body is completed, creating an elegant finished edge. Pre-blocking dimensions measure approximately 62 inches from tip to tip and 21 inches at the widest point, expanding to 67 inches tip-to-tip after blocking.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental shaping techniques to achieve its distinctive scalene silhouette. The pattern uses strategic increases to expand the wrap gradually from a narrow starting point, allowing the piece to grow organically in both dimensions. The lotus flower edging technique is applied as a finishing element after the body is complete, adding textural interest and visual definition to the perimeter of the wrap.

Stitches Used

  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – the primary stitch used throughout the body of the wrap, providing a balanced fabric density and drape suitable for a lace-weight garment
  • Lotus Flower Edging – a decorative stitch pattern applied to the finished edges for an elegant border detail

Materials and Tools

Yarn: One hank of Tanis Fiber Arts Pink Label 100% Superwash Merino Wool in lace weight, totaling 1000 yards (914 meters) and weighing 115 grams. The sample shown uses the colorway Pink Grapefruit.

Hook: Size 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook

Additional Notions: A darning needle for weaving in ends and blocking tools to shape and set the finished wrap

Gauge: 18 half double crochet stitches and 16 rows measure 4 inches (10.16 cm) in a square

Design Inspiration

The wrap is named after Hestia, the goddess of the hearth fire in Greek mythology and the eldest sister of Zeus. Hestia presided over domestic life and was known as the gentlest of all the Olympians, reflecting the gentle, approachable nature of this versatile wrap design.
