Product Description
Hedera Socks were created for a lovely skein of yarn I received from Queen’s Yarn Boutique. The base is Kiss Sock, a wonderfully soft fingering weight yarn, but the colorway, called Serene, is what really inspired me. I wanted to design a pattern that would make the best use of the stunning variegated yarn. I chose mostly stockinette, to allow the beautiful colors to shine, with a simple creeping lace climbing the outside of each foot. They are knit top down, with a German short row heel and a rounded toe. This pattern is written for magic loop, but is easy to change if you prefer a different method.

What is Being Made
Hedera Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed to showcase variegated yarn colorways. Created by designer Jordan Prouty, these socks feature a top-down construction method with a German short row heel and rounded toe shaping. The pattern is specifically engineered to highlight the beauty of color-changing fingering weight yarn through strategic stitch placement and construction choices.
Design Inspiration and Construction Method
The Hedera Socks pattern was inspired by a variegated fingering weight yarn called Serene from Queen's Yarn Boutique. To allow the stunning colors of the yarn to take center stage, the designer chose predominantly stockinette stitch as the main fabric. This straightforward stitch creates an ideal canvas for displaying the natural color variations in the yarn without competing visual elements.
The socks are constructed using the top-down method, beginning at the cuff and working toward the foot and toe. This approach offers practical advantages for fit adjustment and allows knitters to use yarn efficiently. The heel is shaped using the German short row technique, a method that creates a smooth, contoured heel cup through strategic yarn overs and decreases rather than traditional heel flap construction. The toe is finished with rounded shaping for a comfortable, anatomical fit.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout Hedera Socks is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying variegated colorways. Complementing the stockinette base is a simple creeping lace pattern that climbs the outside of each foot. This lace element adds visual interest and textural variety while remaining subtle enough not to overwhelm the yarn's natural color variations.
The pattern incorporates yarn overs and decreases as part of both the lace motif and the German short row heel shaping technique. These fundamental knitting techniques create the dimensional shaping and decorative elements that define the sock's appearance.
Knitting Method and Customization
Hedera Socks are written for the magic loop method, a technique that allows knitters to work small circumference projects like socks on a single long circular needle. The pattern instructions note that this method can be easily adapted for knitters who prefer alternative techniques, such as double-pointed needles or two circular needles, making the pattern accessible to knitters with different equipment preferences and experience levels.
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for approximately 200 to 265 yards of fingering weight yarn, depending on the desired sock size. The sample sock was knitted using Queen's Yarn Boutique Kiss Sock, a fingering weight yarn composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon, which provides durability and easy care. This fiber blend offers softness and elasticity ideal for sock knitting.
Essential tools include Size 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 cm), which provide the appropriate needle size for fingering weight yarn and accommodate the magic loop method. Additional supplies include one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and rounds, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and any necessary finishing work.
Difficulty Level
Hedera Socks are rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. This classification reflects the combination of techniques required: magic loop knitting, lace stitch work, German short row heel shaping, and sock construction fundamentals. Knitters should have solid foundational skills in circular knitting and basic shaping techniques before attempting this pattern.
Yarn Weight Specifications
This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply fingering weight yarns, which are standard weights for sock knitting. Fingering weight yarn, typically ranging from 400 to 500 yards per 100 grams, allows for the creation of fitted, comfortable socks with appropriate fabric density and elasticity.
