Heartstrings Knit Scarf by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud
What is Being Made
Heartstrings is a knitted scarf designed by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud featuring an intricate heart pattern throughout. This finished accessory measures 30cm x 140cm (12 inches x 55 inches) after blocking, making it a versatile length suitable for various styling options. The scarf showcases decorative heart motifs created through strategic stitch placement, combining both knit and purl stitches to form the design elements across the fabric surface.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked using the fundamental technique of back and forth rows, also known as flat knitting. The construction method relies on combining knit and purl stitches on both sides of the work to create the visual heart pattern. This approach allows the designer to build texture and design definition through the interplay of raised knit stitches and recessed purl stitches. The pattern requires intermediate-level knitting skills, as the combination of stitches and the need to maintain pattern accuracy throughout the length of the scarf demands attention to detail and familiarity with reading stitch patterns.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the base structure and contributes to the heart pattern design
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture contrast and define the heart motifs
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease stitch that helps shape the pattern elements
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: 4-ply sock weight yarn is recommended for this project. The pattern provides flexibility in yarn choice, with two sample options documented: approximately 440 yards (400 meters) of standard sock weight yarn in the pink sample, or 100g of ShibuiKnits Sock yarn measuring 382 yards (349 meters) in the blue sample. A total of 100 grams of yarn is required to complete the scarf.
Needles: Size 3.5mm (US 4) needles are specified for this project. However, the pattern notes the importance of using a needle size that achieves the desired gauge, as this directly impacts the finished dimensions and drape of the scarf.
Gauge: The pattern is worked at a gauge of 26 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the heart pattern displays as intended.
Additional Materials: Waste yarn is recommended for creating lifelines if desired, which provides a safety measure during knitting. Blocking equipment is necessary to finish the scarf properly, helping to even out the stitches and set the final dimensions of 30cm x 140cm.
