Product Description

This sock pattern is the perfect textured sock to knit for fall/winter. The tiny, twisted stitches make a lovely textured pattern which provides a nice, warm, cushy sock. Twisted stitches look like tiny cable stitches, but no cable needle is needed. Don’t be intimidated by the twisted stitches, because they are easy to create! The pattern that the stitches create, remind me of wheat, blowing in the wind, and are reminiscent of fall and harvest time, thus the name Harvest Festival.

Note about pattern sizing: For myself, I normally knit my socks using US1.5 and 64 stitch count. I wear a regular US 8. My foot is not narrow, nor wide. However, because of the tightness of the twisted stitch pattern, I knit myself the 72 count size, as specified in this pattern, and it fits perfectly. Please keep this in mind if you think 72 stitches will be too big for you.

If you need to adjust the stitch count for sizing, please add or subtract stitches in multiples of 3.

Harvest Festival Socks by Kimberly Dominic

What is Being Made

The Harvest Festival Socks are a textured knit sock pattern designed for fall and winter wear. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a pair of socks featuring a distinctive twisted stitch texture that resembles wheat blowing in the wind, capturing the essence of harvest season. The pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level and produces warm, cushioned socks ideal for cooler months.

Design and Texture

The defining characteristic of these socks is their use of twisted stitches throughout the pattern. These tiny twisted stitches create a textured appearance similar to cable stitches, but with a significant advantage: no cable needle is required. This makes the pattern more accessible than traditional cable knit designs while still delivering visual interest and dimension. The twisted stitch pattern evokes the imagery of wheat stalks in motion, making these socks thematically appropriate for harvest-inspired knitting projects.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The primary technique featured in this pattern is the use of twisted stitches. Despite their appearance, twisted stitches are straightforward to execute and should not intimidate knitters new to textured sock patterns. The twisted stitch technique creates the illusion of cable work without the complexity of using additional tools. This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more textured, visually interesting constructions.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 1 skein of fingering or sock weight yarn, approximately 400 yards. The sample was knit using Knit Picks Stroll Tonal in the Foliage colorway. Yarn weight options include 3-ply and 4-ply weights.
  • Needles: Size US1.5 (2.5 mm) double-pointed needles for knitting the socks in the round
  • Notions: One stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge and Sizing Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rows equals 2 inches when worked in the twisted stitch pattern. The designer notes that she typically knits her socks using Size US1.5 needles with a 64 stitch count for a regular women's sock size, providing a helpful reference point for knitters customizing their sock dimensions.

Pattern Summary

This is an ideal project for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their textured knitting skills while creating practical, wearable garments. The Harvest Festival Socks combine accessible twisted stitch techniques with seasonal appeal, resulting in warm, textured socks perfect for fall and winter wardrobes. The straightforward construction using double-pointed needles and the moderate yardage requirement make this an efficient project that showcases designer Kimberly Dominic's approach to creating visually interesting yet technically manageable sock patterns.
