Hat & Scarf Set in Hayfield Bonus Extravaganza – Pattern 8172

Pattern 8172 from Hayfield is a collection of four beginner-friendly knitted accessories worked in the super-chunky Hayfield Extravaganza yarn. The set includes a Cabled Scarf, a Long Snood, a Pull-On Hat, and a Textured Scarf, making it an excellent introduction to accessory knitting for those new to the craft or looking for a quick, satisfying make. Because the yarn is super chunky, projects grow rapidly on the needles and the finished fabric has a wonderfully cosy, voluminous feel.

About the Yarn: Hayfield Extravaganza

Hayfield Extravaganza is a super-chunky weight yarn sold in generous 200g balls. The pattern uses four different shades across the four designs: shade 124 for the Cabled Scarf, shade 121 for the Long Snood, shade 122 for the Pull-On Hat, and shade 126 for the Textured Scarf. Because each accessory requires only one or two balls, the pattern is economical as well as quick to complete.

Needles and Tools Required

  • 12mm (USA 17) knitting needles – used for the Cabled Scarf
  • 10mm (UK 000 / USA 15) knitting needles – used for the remaining three accessories
  • Cable needle – required for the Cabled Scarf only

The larger needle size used for the Cabled Scarf allows the cable pattern panel to open up beautifully, while the 10mm needles produce a firm, well-defined fabric for the snood, hat, and textured scarf.

Finished Measurements

  • Cabled Scarf: approximately 20 cm wide × 82 cm long (8 in × 71¾ in)
  • Long Snood: approximately 18 cm wide × 140 cm long (7 in × 55¼ in)
  • Pull-On Hat: designed to fit an average size woman's head
  • Textured Scarf: approximately 19 cm wide × 140 cm long (7½ in × 55¼ in)

The Cabled Scarf

The Cabled Scarf is the most technically involved piece in the collection, though it remains very accessible for a beginner who wants to try cabling for the first time. It is worked on 12mm needles using 22 stitches across a Cable Pattern Panel. The tension for this piece is 20 cm (8 in) in width over the cable panel, with 12 rows measuring 11 cm (4¼ in).

Cables are created by temporarily placing stitches onto a cable needle, working the next stitches from the main needle, and then working the held stitches. This crossing action twists the fabric and produces the characteristic rope-like or plaited appearance associated with traditional cable knitting. In this pattern, stitches are slipped to both the front and the back of the cable needle at different points in the repeat, creating a panel with visual depth and texture.

Stitches and Techniques – Cabled Scarf

  • Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the background fabric
  • Cable crossings worked over groups of stitches using a cable needle
  • Make 1 purlways (m1p) – picking up the loop between stitches and purling into the back of it, used to shape the cable panel
  • Increase (inc) within the foundation row to build the stitch count for the cable panel
  • Slip 1 knitways (s1) for neat selvedge and cable preparation
