Harley Prem Baby 8ply Hat - Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Harley is a beginner-friendly knitted beanie designed specifically for premature and newborn babies. This pattern offers four different sizes to accommodate varying head measurements: Prem 1 (20cm), Prem 2 (25cm), Prem 3 (30cm), and Newborn (35cm). The hat is suitable for both baby girls and boys, making it a versatile design for gift-giving or personal projects.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Harley beanie is constructed using an easy block stitch, which creates a simple yet visually interesting textured pattern. The block stitch is achieved through alternating rows of knit and purl stitches in a regular repeat pattern, making it ideal for knitters new to textured stitch work.
The pattern uses fundamental knitting abbreviations and techniques including:
- Knit stitch (K) - the basic foundation stitch
- Purl stitch (P) - used in alternation to create the block texture
- Stocking stitch - the base fabric used for tension calculations
- Casting on - to begin the beanie
- Repeat patterns - indicated by asterisks to create consistent texture throughout
The block stitch pattern repeats across rows in a 5-stitch module, creating a balanced, symmetrical appearance that works beautifully on small baby garments.
Yarn and Materials
The Harley pattern calls for 8ply yarn (also known as DK weight), specifically Lincraft Double Knitting. Only one 100g ball is required regardless of size selection, with each ball providing approximately 250 metres of yarn. The 8ply weight provides an ideal balance of warmth and breathability for delicate baby skin.
Knitting needles required are 4.00mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6), paired with a wool needle for seaming and finishing. The tension is set at 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm measured over stocking stitch.
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Rated as Easy, this pattern is perfect for beginner knitters. The straightforward block stitch requires only basic knit and purl skills, and the small size means projects work up quickly, providing satisfying results for those new to the craft. The multiple size options allow knitters to practice on different gauges without pattern complexity.
