Product Description
The Harlequin Infant Sleeper was designed because I needed a quick project for a baby shower. I love the idea of sleepers because it is basically a blanket that stays in place. Adding the fun and whimsical crochet harlequin pattern makes the design charming for boys and girls.
The sleeper is designed to fit infants from 0-3 months old. The pattern was made using a lighter worsted weight yarn, but gauge can also be met with some DK weight yarn. You will need about 600 yards. Other supplies you will need include a crochet hook H (5.00 mm), measuring tape, scissors, tapestry needle, stitch markers and two 1" buttons.
The pattern includes written instructions and photo tutorials to help you see that you are on the right track.

What is Being Made
The Harlequin Infant Sleeper is a crochet blanket and throw designed for newborns and infants aged 0-3 months. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a wearable sleeper garment with a harlequin design, featuring button closures for easy dressing and undressing of infants. The completed sleeper measures 14 inches wide at the widest section of the bottom, 10 inches wide at the underarms, and 21 inches in total length, with arm openings measuring 3 inches.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to construct the infant sleeper. The pattern utilizes foundation single crochet as a starting technique, which creates a stable base without requiring a separate chain foundation row. The design incorporates front post stitches to create textural depth and visual interest in the harlequin pattern. Shaping is achieved through strategic stitch decreases, specifically by crocheting two stitches together to reduce stitch count where needed for proper fit around the underarms and armholes. The garment is worked in rows and rounds, allowing for dimensional construction of the sleeper body and sleeve sections.
Stitches Used
- Foundation Single Crochet (Foundation Sc): Creates the initial foundation without a separate chain
- Single Crochet (Sc): The most basic crochet stitch, used throughout for structure and detail
- Half Double Crochet (Hdc): A medium-height stitch providing balanced drape and density
- Double Crochet (Dc): A taller stitch used for sections requiring more openness or drape
- Treble Crochet (Tr): The tallest stitch in this pattern, creating airy sections
- Two Together Decrease (2tog): Crocheting two stitches together to decrease stitch count for shaping
- Chain Stitches (Ch): Used for spacing and creating openings
- Front Post Stitches (FP): Stitches worked around the post of previous stitches to create textural variation
Materials Required
The Harlequin Infant Sleeper requires 600 yards of DK weight yarn (also compatible with Finer Worsted Weight Yarn, #4 weight). The sample garment was created using Baby Wonder by Herrschners in the Naptime colorway. Alternative yarn options suitable for this project include Lion Brand Heartland, Knit Picks Brava, Caron Simply Soft, Premier Yarns Cotton Soft Silk, and Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek. A size H (5 mm) crochet hook is required to work with the specified yarn weight and achieve proper gauge. Additional materials include two 1-inch buttons for closures, four stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a measuring tape to verify dimensions and gauge throughout the project.
Gauge Considerations
Proper gauge is emphasized as essential for obtaining the correct finished size of the infant sleeper. Crocheters are instructed to adjust their hook size as needed to match the pattern's specified gauge, ensuring the garment fits appropriately for a 0-3 month old infant.
