Product Description
The Harba Wrap has a scaly appearance because of the V-like cable pattern across the fabric. This wrap is worked in two mirror-image halves, and the pieces are grafted together seamlessly in the centre.
NOTES
This wrap consists of two mirror-image halves, each worked from one short end inwards to the center, then the pieces are joined by grafting the stitches together in pattern.
Any sport weight yarn can be used for this pattern provided you attain the correct tension/gauge.
Sample made using Lorna’s Laces Sportmate (70% superwash Merino, 30% Outlast viscose; 270 yd [247 m]/3½ oz [100 g]): #308 Huron, 4 hanks.
Harba Knit Shawl Wrap by neish design
What is Being Made
The Harba is a knitted shawl wrap designed by neish design, measuring 66 inches in length and 13 inches in width. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated wrap featuring a distinctive scale-like texture achieved through strategically placed cross stitches. The finished piece combines visual interest with wearable elegance, suitable for layering or draping.
Construction Method
The Harba wrap is constructed using a two-piece method, with each half worked flat on straight needles before being joined together using a three-needle bind off technique. This approach allows knitters to manage the project in sections while building toward the final unified piece. The pattern is organized into clearly defined sections to guide the knitter through the construction process.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout the Harba is stocking stitch, which forms the foundation of the design. The visual complexity comes from the clever integration of Left and Right Cross stitches that are deliberately staggered across the fabric. This staggering creates the signature scale-like appearance that defines the wrap's aesthetic character.
The stitch repeat itself is also staggered, creating a central V-shape of stocking stitch rib that provides clean lines and contributes to the overall fluidity of the finished garment. This thoughtful stitch arrangement balances texture with structure, preventing the wrap from appearing overly busy while maintaining visual interest throughout.
Techniques Employed
- Flat knitting on straight needles
- Cross stitch integration (Left and Right variations)
- Staggered stitch repeats for dimensional effect
- Three-needle bind off for joining sections
- Gauge adjustment for proper fit and drape
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The Harba requires 880 meters or 963 yards of sport or light DK weight yarn. The sample was created using Lorna's Laces Sportmate in shade 308 Huron, a blend of 70% Superwash Merino and 30% Outlast Viscose. This fiber content provides both softness and durability, with the viscose component adding subtle sheen and temperature-regulating properties. Any sport or light DK weight yarn with the correct tension will work for this project.
Needles: This pattern calls for 3.5 mm (US size 4) straight needles, plus one additional needle for executing the three-needle bind off. Having an extra needle on hand ensures smooth finishing without needing to cast on additional stitches.
Additional Notions: A cable needle is required for working the cross stitches that create the wrap's distinctive texture. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches in stocking stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions of 66 inches in length and 13 inches in width. Knitters should adjust needle size up or down as necessary to match this gauge, as variations in tension will affect the final size and drape of the wrap.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Harba is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with cross stitches and managing stitch repeats. The two-piece construction and section-based pattern breakdown make the project approachable, while the cross stitch elements and staggered repeats provide enough complexity to engage experienced knitters seeking a rewarding challenge.
