Product Description

This is a straightforward men’s pullover with a secret code knitted into it for fun. The rib pattern running up each side and down each sleeve is based on the binary code for a set of initials. These can be the initials of the person who’s wearing the sweater, someone else’s, or whatever you like. You can even spell out a word (as long as it only has 4 letters). Strategic finishing techniques help this sweater hang well and look interesting. The front and back are worked flat. A few short rows across the shoulders improve the fit and keep the back of the sweater from riding up. The body is assembled using 3-needle seams, and then the sleeves are picked up and worked in the round from the top down with short-row sleeve caps. Instructions are provided to convert this pattern to a cozy boyfriend-style sweater for women. * Note: choose EITHER Harrisville Designs WATERshed OR Artesano Aran for this project.

Note: Pattern updated 16 Aug 2016. Corrected short row and back neckline BO for XS.

Hacker Men's Pullover by Cheryl Niamath

What Is Being Made

Hacker is a men's pullover sweater that combines classic knitwear construction with a personalized hidden message. The design features a secret code knitted directly into the fabric using a rib pattern that runs up each side of the body and down each sleeve. This binary code can represent a set of initials belonging to the wearer, someone special, or any four-letter word of your choosing, making each sweater a unique and meaningful garment.

Design Features and Customization

The sweater is designed with strategic finishing techniques that enhance both the fit and visual interest of the finished piece. The hidden binary code rib pattern serves as the primary design element, allowing for personalization while maintaining a clean, wearable aesthetic. The design is available in sizes XS through XXL, with the sample shown in size L featuring 3.5 inches of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

For those seeking a cozy boyfriend-style pullover adapted for women, the pattern offers modification instructions: simply make the body one to two inches shorter before the armhole decreases and omit the short rows across the back for an alternative silhouette.

Knitting Techniques Used

Hacker employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its polished construction:

  • Flat knitting: The front and back pieces are worked flat on straight needles or circular needles in rows, allowing for straightforward shaping and pattern work
  • Short-row shaping: Strategic short rows are worked across the shoulders to improve fit and prevent the back of the sweater from riding up, a common fitting issue in pullover construction
  • 3-needle seaming: The body pieces are assembled using the 3-needle bind-off technique, which creates a strong, flexible seam ideal for joining shoulder and side seams
  • Top-down sleeve construction: Sleeves are picked up from the armhole and worked in the round from the top down, allowing for easy customization of sleeve length and seamless integration with the body
  • Short-row sleeve caps: The sleeve caps are shaped using short rows worked in the round, creating a well-fitted sleeve head that sits smoothly at the shoulder

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern featured in Hacker is a rib pattern that encodes the binary message. Ribs are created by alternating knit and purl stitches in vertical columns, and in this design, the specific arrangement of these ribs represents binary code. The binary encoding system allows each letter to be represented as a series of knit and purl columns, with the pattern running continuously up the sides of the body and down the length of each sleeve. This creates a subtle yet meaningful texture that adds visual depth while remaining elegant and wearable.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Hacker is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for sweater construction. Aran weight yarn is ideal for this project as it allows the rib pattern and binary code details to be clearly visible while creating a fabric with good structure and warmth. The pattern is worked using knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn, with the flat pieces worked on straight or circular needles and the sleeves worked on circular needles for in-the-round knitting.

Difficulty Level

Hacker is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The intermediate difficulty reflects the combination of flat and in-the-round knitting, the use of short-row shaping, and the precision required for the binary code rib pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping, seaming techniques, and picking up stitches before beginning this project.
