Gwendolyn Knit Shawl Pattern by bunnymuff - Mona Zillah

What is Being Made

Gwendolyn is a knitted shawl designed by independent designer bunnymuff (Mona Zillah). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished shawl using color-changing and solid cotton yarns in fingering and sport weights, resulting in a delicate, wearable accessory.

Craft and Technique

This pattern is executed entirely through knitting, the primary craft technique. The shawl incorporates strategic stitch decreases and yarn overs to create shaping and texture throughout the design. The pattern uses a combination of fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners.

Stitches Used

The Gwendolyn shawl employs several key stitches and stitch techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) - the foundational stitch forming the base fabric
  • Knit two together (k2tog) - a right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count
  • Knit three together (k3tog) - a double decrease creating more pronounced shaping
  • Central double decrease (cdd) - created by slipping two stitches knit-wise together, knitting one stitch, then passing the slipped stitches over the knitted stitch for a centered decrease
  • Centered double decrease with yarn over (cddB) - a variation combining the central double decrease with a yarn over placement for lace or texture elements
  • Bind off (BO) - finished edges, with Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off (JSSBO) recommended for optimal elasticity

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Gwendolyn pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn in two coordinating options:

  • Color Changing Cotton 100 gr by Wolle's Yarn Creations - 100% cotton, fingering weight, 480 yards (439 meters) per 100 grams; approximately one skein required
  • Shades of Cotton by Lana Grossa - 100% cotton, sport weight, 875 yards (800 meters) per 200 grams; provides an alternative for varied finished dimensions

The pattern is worked on 3.5mm (US size 4) needles. Gauge is not critical for this design, though knitters should aim for approximately 7 stitches over 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) when measured unblocked, particularly important for those with loose knitting tension.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern suits knitters comfortable with basic stitches who are ready to work with decreases, yarn overs, and stitch manipulations. The gauge flexibility makes it forgiving for tension variations.

Pattern Format

Gwendolyn is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate digital access and printing.
