Product Description
This pattern is Free until the 1st of February These lacy mittens might look tricky, but the lace pattern is quite easy to memorise, it has a minimal number of purl stitches as the mittens are worked in the round. For two mittens I've used just over 30g of 4ply yarn, which makes them very economical to knit out of the loveliest yarns.
Correction: Even though in the pattern for Fern lace for the wrong side it says K13, p2, K to end, the actual fern pattern is a 28 stitch repeat and is only worked on the front of the mitt, so it should be K13, p2, K13, then knit to end of round. (Thank you, cwknitnut for pointing it out!)
Green Fingers Fingerless Mitts by IrinaPi
Project Overview
Green Fingers fingerless mitts are an advanced knitting project designed to create elegant, wearable hand coverings. These fingerless mittens are crafted using a combination of traditional knitting techniques and decorative stitch patterns, resulting in a sophisticated accessory suitable for any female hand. The design showcases intricate colorwork and textured stitching that demonstrates advanced knitting skills.
What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a pair of fingerless mittens—hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed while providing warmth and coverage for the palm, back of hand, and wrist area. The finished mittens feature a broken rib pattern that creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity. These mitts are designed as a unisex accessory that adapts to various hand sizes with simple modifications.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Green Fingers fingerless mitts employ several advanced knitting techniques that elevate this project beyond beginner level:
- Circular knitting: The pattern uses either a circular needle or double-pointed needles (DPNs), allowing for seamless construction in the round, which creates a polished finish without seaming
- Cross 2 left stitch: A decorative cable-inspired technique where you knit into the back of the second stitch on the needle, then knit into the back of the first stitch, then slip both stitches off the needle—this creates a twisted, textured effect
- Yarn overs and decreases: The pattern incorporates yarn overs (yo) and knit two together (k2tog) decreases, which are fundamental to lace and textured stitch patterns
- Make one increases: Both make one right (M1R) and make one left (M1L) techniques are used to shape the mittens while maintaining pattern integrity
- Broken rib pattern: A modified ribbing pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence, creating visual texture while allowing the fabric to stretch and fit comfortably
- Marker placement: Strategic use of stitch markers helps track pattern repeats and shaping increases throughout the project
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses the following key stitches and abbreviations:
- CO: Cast on—the foundation row of stitches
- Cross 2 left: Knit into the back of the second stitch, then knit into the back of the first stitch, then slip both off the needle
- K2tog: Knit two together—a right-leaning decrease
- Yo: Yarn over—creates a decorative hole and increases one stitch
- PSSO: Pass the slipped stitch over—used in conjunction with yarn overs for lace effects
- Pm: Place marker—indicates pattern repeat sections
- Sl m: Slip marker—move marker from one needle to the next without knitting it
- M1R: Make one right—a left-leaning increase
- M1L: Make one left—a right-leaning increase
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Quince and Co Finch in 4-ply weight is the recommended yarn choice. One 50-gram skein contains 202 meters of yarn, providing ample yardage for the project. The pattern used approximately 30 grams from one skein to complete the fingerless mitts, leaving extra yarn for potential adjustments or future projects.
Needles: The pattern calls for either a 3.5 mm (US size 4) circular needle or a set of four double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size. The designer recommends using needles with sharp tips, as these make it significantly easier to knit through the back loop when executing the Cross 2 left stitches—a critical technique in this pattern.
Gauge: The pattern is worked at a gauge of 6 stitches and 10 rows per inch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly since the broken rib pattern requires stitch counts in multiples of 7 to maintain pattern integrity.
