Grafton Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

Grafton is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This pullover-style garment is available in five size options, ranging from chest measurements of 91-97 cm (36-38 inches) through to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The finished garment features an actual chest measurement between 100 cm and 140 cm depending on size selection, with center back length ranging from 63 to 70 cm. Sleeve seams measure between 46 and 48 cm across the size range, making this a versatile sweater suitable for various body types and proportions.

Yarn and Materials

Grafton is knitted using King Cole Fashion Aran yarn, which provides 200 metres (219 yards) per 100g ball. The pattern requires 6 to 8 balls of 100g depending on the size being knitted, in the shade Oban. The aran weight yarn creates a fabric with good structure and drape suitable for a classic sweater construction.

The needles required include:

  • 1 pair of 4 mm (UK 8, US 6) knitting needles
  • 1 pair of 5 mm (UK 6, US 8) knitting needles
  • 1 set of 4 mm (UK 8, US 6) knitting needles (for working in the round)
  • 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level sweater employs fundamental knitting techniques that build essential skills. The pattern utilizes reverse stockinette stitch as a primary stitch, which creates a textured fabric with the characteristic bumpy side facing outward. The design also incorporates patterned sections that add visual interest and complexity to the garment.

The construction method involves working flat on straight needles for the body and sleeves, with stitch holders used to manage live stitches during assembly. The neckband is worked separately, likely using the set of 4 mm needles for ribbed finishing. This traditional sweater construction approach allows knitters to practice shaping techniques including increases and decreases for sleeve caps and armhole shaping.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving correct tension is critical for this pattern. The specified tension is 18 stitches and 25 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over reverse stockinette stitch using 5 mm needles. For the patterned sections, the gauge is 22 stitches in width to 10 cm (4 inches) using 5 mm needles. Knitters are advised to test their tension before beginning the project, as variations in tension will significantly affect the finished garment measurements and fit.

The pattern notes that yarn amounts are approximate based on average requirements, and recommends that any yarn substitutions maintain the same tension as stated in the pattern to ensure successful results.

Good service as always

Pattern was as expected but I have to downsize the needles as, even on the small size, the measurements are too big.

A knitter's paradise!

Remarkably easy pattern to follow, and looks good when knitted up.
