Product Description

This sweater is knit sideways, with each side worked from the centre of the body out to the sleeve cuffs. Due to the non-standard construction, this pattern is suitable for a knitter with some experience. However, it is not otherwise difficult to knit. You will need to know how to make basic increases and decreases, provisionally cast-on, graft, kitchener stitch, 3-needle bind-off and pick up stitches. If you want to avoid grafting, alternate methods for joining the sides are offered. Intended to be worn with a few inches of positive ease at the bust. Length is 60 cm or 23.5 inches, but is easily modified. Choose an aran or worsted weight yarn that produces a fabric that is not too rigid. Shown in Lang Yarns Yak.

Goose Knitted Sweater by Heidi Kirrmaier

What is Being Made

Goose is a knitted sweater designed by Heidi Kirrmaier, available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL to fit bust measurements from 81 cm to 121 cm (32 to 48 inches). The finished garment offers generous ease at the bust and upper hips, with the sample shown in size S featuring approximately 12 cm ease at the bust and 5 cm ease at the hips. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a wearable, well-fitted pullover suitable for various body types.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment is worked primarily in stockinette stitch and incorporates seamless construction methods. The design utilizes circular needles for working the body and sleeves in the round, which is a common technique for creating seamless knitwear. Stitch markers are employed to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used in this sweater is stockinette stitch (st st), which creates the smooth, classic fabric characteristic of many knitted garments. The pattern requires maintaining consistent gauge throughout the project to ensure proper fit across all size options.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Goose is designed to be worked in Aran or Worsted weight yarn that produces a fabric with appropriate drape and structure. The pattern specifies yarn that is not too rigid, allowing for comfortable wear and natural movement. The sample garment shown was knitted using Lang Yarns Yak in colour 03.

Yarn yardage requirements vary by size:

  • XS: 1000 m / 1100 yds
  • S: 1100 m / 1200 yds
  • M: 1150 m / 1250 yds
  • L: 1250 m / 1350 yds
  • XL: 1375 m / 1500 yds
  • XXL: 1475 m / 1600 yds

Needles and Tools Required

The pattern calls for 4.5 mm circular needles in two lengths to accommodate different sections of the sweater. You will need one needle measuring 80 to 120 cm in length for working the body, and a second needle measuring 40 to 60 cm for working the sleeves in the round using your preferred method. Additional supplies include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and scrap yarn for any provisional cast-on techniques.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18.5 stitches and 26 rows per 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements across all six size options. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project to ensure their yarn and needle combination produces this gauge.
