Glamour Scarf by Susan Lowman
What Is Being Made
The Glamour Scarf is a lightweight, shimmering crocheted accessory designed to add sparkle and elegance to any wardrobe. This finished scarf measures approximately 4 1/2 inches wide by 58 inches long, making it a versatile length suitable for various styling options. The project is completed using just one skein of yarn, making it an efficient and quick-to-complete design that works up rapidly for immediate wear or gift-giving.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the crochet technique, specifically designed as a beginner-level pattern. Crochet is a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, forming fabric from a series of connected stitches. The Glamour Scarf demonstrates fundamental crochet construction methods suitable for those new to the craft, requiring only basic stitch knowledge and hook control.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crocheted garments:
- Chain stitch (ch) – The foundational stitch used to create the base of the scarf and to build height between rows
- Single crochet (sc) – A basic, tight stitch that creates dense fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – A taller stitch that allows fabric to work up more quickly
- Shell stitch – A decorative stitch pattern formed by grouping multiple stitches together, creating the scalloped or shell-like texture characteristic of this design
The gauge for this project is set at 4 shells measuring 4 inches horizontally, with 6 rows measuring 3 3/4 inches vertically, ensuring proper finished dimensions.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Glamour Scarf is constructed using sport weight yarn, classified as fine weight fiber. The recommended yarn is Vanna's Glamour by Lion Brand in the colorway #109 Sapphire, though any compatible sport weight yarn may be substituted. The yarn composition is 96% acrylic with 4% metallic polyester, providing both durability and the signature shimmer that gives this scarf its name. One skein contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and yields 202 yards (185 meters) of usable fiber—the exact amount needed for this project.
The pattern calls for a Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook, or the size required to achieve the specified gauge. The hook size may be adjusted slightly depending on individual crochet tension to ensure the finished scarf matches the intended dimensions.
Design Summary
Created by designer Susan Lowman and published by The Crochet Architect, the Glamour Scarf combines ease of construction with visual impact. The incorporation of metallic polyester fibers within the acrylic yarn base creates a lustrous, eye-catching finish that elevates the simple stitch pattern into an elegant accessory. The shell stitch pattern provides textural interest while remaining accessible to beginner crocheters, making this an ideal project for those building foundational skills while producing a wearable, gift-worthy result.
