Giesel Cardigan by Irina Anikeeva
What is Being Made
The Giesel Cardigan is a women's knitted cardigan designed by Irina Anikeeva, available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4XL to fit bust measurements from 28/30 inches (71/76 cm) up to 56/58 inches (142/147 cm). This garment is worked flat in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms, with fronts and back subsequently worked separately before shoulders are joined together. The finished cardigan features a button front closure with seven buttons measuring 5/8 inches (16 mm) in diameter.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential techniques that create visual interest and structure. The cardigan utilizes a provisional cast-on method, allowing for seamless integration of stitches later in construction. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic appearance. A 22-stitch lace pattern repeat is incorporated throughout the design, measuring 3¾ inches (9.5 cm) after blocking and adding delicate texture to the garment. The construction method of working flat in one piece before separating sections demonstrates intermediate shaping and seaming skills.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – the foundational stitch creating the smooth fabric base
- Lace Pattern – a 22-stitch repeat that adds decorative openwork details
- Crochet Chain – used for provisional cast-on techniques
Materials and Specifications
The Giesel Cardigan is worked in sport weight yarn, with approximate yardage requirements beginning at 990 yards for the smallest size (XS) and increasing to 1680 yards for the largest size (4XL). The pattern requires standard knitting notions including stitch markers, waste yarn, a cable needle, and a crochet hook sized E/3.5 mm for the provisional cast-on technique. A tapestry needle is needed for finishing and weaving in ends.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
Proper gauge is essential for this project: 24 stitches and 32 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch after blocking. The lace pattern repeat measures 3¾ inches (9.5 cm) after blocking. Finished bust circumference measurements range from 34 inches (85 cm) for size XS to 64 inches (160 cm) for size 4XL, with intended ease of +4 to +10 inches (10 to 25 cm) depending on desired fit. The cardigan shown in the sample is size M with a finished bust circumference of 49 inches (122.5 cm), displayed on a 38-inch (95 cm) bust with 11 inches (27.5 cm) of positive ease.
