What you'll need

Product Description

This Giant Basketweave Crochet Afghan Pattern creates huge 7.5" rows of that classic basketweave design. But, don't worry. You don't have to go searching for and spend a ton of money on jumbo or ultra bulky yarn and an enormous crochet hook. This design is worked with worsted weight yarn (approx 3350-3500 yards) and a K-10.5/6.50mm hook. (Other required items are a tapestry needle and scissors.)

The design is worked all as one piece in rows all the way across, so you don't have to worry about stitching together pieces at the end to get the final alternating weave effect. And, you don't have to be an experienced crocheter in order to work this pattern. The pattern is written out and there are stitch directions for new crocheters to follow. There is also a section included which explains the logistics of a basketweave design which may be useful if you desire to alter the size of your afghan from that of the pattern.

What is Being Made

The Giant Basketweave Afghan is an easy crochet blanket and throw designed by Alicia LaFontaine. This finished piece measures 47 inches by 62 inches, making it a substantial throw-sized blanket suitable for draping over furniture or using as a cozy wrap. The project is worked in a straightforward row-by-row construction, with the piece turned at the end of each row to create the characteristic basketweave texture.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to beginners while still creating visual interest through textural contrast. The primary technique is the alternation between front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches, which creates the distinctive basketweave appearance by working around the posts of stitches from previous rows rather than into the tops of stitches. This post-stitch method produces a three-dimensional woven effect without requiring complicated stitch combinations.

The pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. Crafters can extend the width of the afghan by adding multiples of 20 stitches and following the recurring sequence pattern of 20 fpdc, 20 bpdc, 20 fpdc across each row. However, the pattern notes specify that to maintain proper basketweave alignment, additional stitches must be added in multiples of 40 to ensure the pattern sequence remains consistent throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch): Used for foundation and turning chains. Chain-3 (ch-3) counts as a stitch in this pattern, while chain-2 (ch-2) does not count as a stitch.
  • Front post double crochet (fpdc): Worked by inserting the hook around the front post of a stitch from a previous row, creating raised texture on the front of the fabric.
  • Back post double crochet (bpdc): Worked by inserting the hook around the back post of a stitch from a previous row, creating raised texture on the back of the fabric and contributing to the woven appearance.

Materials and Tools

The Giant Basketweave Afghan requires approximately 3,350 to 3,500 yards of worsted weight yarn. The featured example uses Mainstays Basic acrylic yarn in Soft Pink, which provides approximately 397 yards per 7-ounce skein, making this an economical project suitable for various budgets. Acrylic yarn is durable, easy to care for, and ideal for a large blanket project.

Additional materials include a US K10.5/6.5mm crochet hook, scissors for cutting yarn, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The gauge for this pattern is 4 inches equals 10 rows and 15 front post double crochet stitches, which helps ensure the finished dimensions match the intended 47 by 62 inches.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for newer crocheters looking to expand their skills beyond basic stitches. While the pattern introduces post stitches—fpdc and bpdc—these techniques are fundamental to many crochet projects and are well within reach for beginners willing to learn. The repetitive nature of the basketweave pattern, once established, allows crafters to develop rhythm and consistency in their work.
