Product Description
Geronimo is an exquisitely warm, chunky, yet lightweight jumper. Knitted on big needles, in two colours, for extra impact, however it can equaly be knitted in one colour for the more traditional look. Although designed as menswear, Geronimo can look equally good when worn by females. The cable detailing is subtle but striking and creates an instant impression. Needle size: 5 mm straight, 6 mm straight, 5 mm circular. Tension: 15 sts and 20 rows to 10 cm square over Stocking Stitch using 6 mm needles.
Geronimo Cable Jumper by Kari-Helene Rane
What is Being Made
The Geronimo Cable Jumper is a knitted pullover sweater designed by independent designer Kari-Helene Rane. This intermediate-level knitting project is available in four sizes: Small (to fit 92cm/36in chest), Medium (to fit 100cm/39in chest), Large (to fit 108cm/42in chest), and Extra Large (to fit 116cm/45in chest). The sample shown is worked in size Medium.
Techniques Used
This jumper employs cable knitting as its signature technique, incorporating cable crosses that require a cable needle to manipulate stitches. The pattern uses both straight and circular needles depending on the section being worked: the body and sleeves can be constructed on either straight or circular needles for flexibility, while the collar is specifically worked on circular needles. The garment is finished with light steaming to set the tension and enhance the cable definition.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Geronimo Cable Jumper features multiple stitch patterns throughout its construction:
- Seed Stitch: A textured stitch pattern with a 2-stitch multiple and 2-row repeat, created by alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) across rows. This creates a bumpy, reversible fabric often used for edgings and textural interest.
- 2x2 Rib: A classic ribbed pattern with a 4-stitch multiple plus 2 edge stitches, worked over a 2-row repeat. The pattern alternates knit 2, purl 2 on the right side with purl 2, knit 2 on the wrong side, creating vertical columns of texture that provide stretch and recovery.
- Cable Stitches: Cable crosses (referenced as C4B in the pattern notes) are worked using a 6mm cable needle to create the signature dimensional cable texture that defines this jumper.
Materials and Gauge
The Geronimo Cable Jumper is worked in Purl Alpaca Medium, a luxurious 100% English alpaca yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size requires 10 balls of Colour A and 2 balls of Colour B (each 50g ball yields 77 metres), while the largest size requires 12 balls of Colour A and 3 balls of Colour B. The sample shown is photographed in the shades 'Alpaca Storm' and 'Alpaca Night'.
The pattern is worked at a tension of 15 stitches and 20 rows to a 10cm square using 6mm needles over stocking stitch after light steaming. To achieve proper fit and drape, knitters should use 5mm needles for ribbed sections and 6mm needles for the main body, adjusting needle size as needed to match the specified tension.
Notions and Equipment
In addition to the yarn and needles, the Geronimo Cable Jumper requires a 6mm cable needle for working the cable crosses and a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction.
