Geo Folk C2C Grey Crochet Afghan in Bernat Blanket – Pattern Summary

The Geo Folk C2C Crochet Afghan is a stunning, large-scale throw blanket designed by the Bernat Design Team and worked in the popular corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique. Finished dimensions measure approximately 51" x 59" [129.5 cm x 150 cm], excluding fringe, making it a generous, couch-ready blanket with bold geometric folk-inspired colorwork. This is a downloadable PDF pattern available at no cost, rated at an intermediate skill level.

What Is Being Made

This project produces a thick, cozy crochet afghan featuring a geometric folk art design rendered in a grid-based colorwork chart. The blanket is worked diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, growing block by block until the full width is reached, then decreasing back down to the final corner. A knotted fringe is added along the edges to complete the look. The finished piece is substantial and warm, ideal as a decorative throw or a functional blanket for cooler months.

Techniques Used

  • Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Crochet: The entire afghan is constructed diagonally, starting from a single block at one corner and increasing one block per row until the widest point is reached at row 37 (37 blocks across), then decreasing symmetrically back to a single block at the opposite corner. This technique creates a satisfying diagonal rhythm and is well-suited to colorwork charts.
  • Colorwork from a Chart: Each square on the provided grid chart represents one C2C block. The pattern instructs the crocheter to wind small separate balls of each contrast color to manage multiple color areas simultaneously, a technique known as intarsia in the crochet world.
  • Color Changing: Colors are changed mid-row by working to the last two loops of a stitch, then yarning over with the new color and pulling through to complete the stitch. This creates clean, crisp color transitions within the block grid.
  • Fringe Application: Cut strands of Contrast A (Coal) measuring 10 inches are used to add knotted fringe along the edges of the finished blanket, giving it a classic, finished look.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch): Used to begin each row and to form the foundation of each new block.
  • Double Crochet (Dc): The primary stitch used to build each C2C block. Every block consists of 3 double crochets worked into a chain-3 space, creating a neat, uniform tile across the entire afghan.
  • Slip Stitch (Sl st): Used when joining into the chain-3 space of an existing block to begin a new block in the same row.

Each C2C block is formed by chaining 6, working 1 double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook, and then 1 double crochet into each of the last 2 chains — a simple but satisfying unit that builds quickly with super chunky yarn. On subsequent rows, blocks are added by slip stitching and chaining 3 into the chain-3 space of the previous row's block, then working 3 double crochets into that same space.
