Garter Tee by JustJussi
What is Being Made
The Garter Tee is a cute short-sleeved knitted top designed for babies and toddlers. This garment is worked in one piece, making it an efficient construction method that minimizes seaming. The pattern is available in five sizes to fit ages 3 months through 24 months, with chest measurements ranging from 40.5 cm to 50.5 cm. This original knitwear design by Justine Turner offers a practical and charming piece for a young child's wardrobe.
Techniques Used
The Garter Tee employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level knitter. The garment is constructed using the one-piece method, which streamlines the building process and reduces the number of seams required for finishing. The pattern incorporates the 3-needle bind off technique, a professional finishing method where stitches from two needles are held together with right sides facing, and a third needle is used to knit corresponding stitches from both needles together while simultaneously binding them off. This creates a strong, neat seam that is ideal for joining pieces like shoulder seams.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure in the Garter Tee is garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a dense, textured fabric with horizontal ridges on both sides, making it reversible and ideal for garments that require durability and structure. The pattern also includes standard knit and purl stitches as foundational elements, with instructions for binding off stitches both knitwise and purlwise depending on the desired finish.
Materials
The Garter Tee is designed to be worked in sport weight or light DK yarn, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern requires approximately 166 meters (181 yards) per 50 grams (1.76 ounces) of yarn, though the designer notes that yarn at 137 meters to 50 grams has also been successfully used. Wool or wool blend yarn is recommended for its elasticity, warmth, and durability in baby garments. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to achieve proper gauge and fabric consistency throughout the project.
