Garden Gnome Superfast Slouch Hat Knitting Pattern by madmonkeyknits
What Is Being Made
The Garden Gnome Superfast Slouch Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat pattern designed by madmonkeyknits (Pattern No. 67 from the MadBeanieHats collection). This slouch-style hat is available in three sizes to fit head circumferences ranging from 45–50 cm (18–22 inches) for small, 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) for medium, and 55–65 cm (22–26 inches) for large. The finished hat measures 50 cm (20 inches), 60 cm (24 inches), or 65 cm (26 inches) in actual circumference, making it a relaxed, comfortable fit ideal for casual wear.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs a straightforward construction method suitable for intermediate knitters. The hat begins with a ribbed cuff worked in knit and purl ribbing, which provides stretch and helps the hat stay securely on the head. The ribbed section is worked for 8–12 rows depending on size. Following the ribbed cuff, the main body of the hat is created using stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows), which produces a smooth, classic fabric with a subtle V-pattern texture. The pattern uses a technique of knitting with two strands of aran-weight yarn held together simultaneously, which creates a thicker, faster-knitting fabric while maintaining proper tension and structure.
Stitches Used
The Garden Gnome Superfast Slouch Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches that are accessible to intermediate-level crafters:
- Knit stitch (K): The basic forward stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl stitch (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural variation and the ribbed cuff
- Ribbing (R): A combination of alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 pattern) that creates vertical columns of texture, providing elasticity and a fitted edge
- Stockinette stitch (st.st): Created by alternating one row of knits with one row of purls, producing the smooth, flat surface that forms the main body of the hat
- Decreases (DEC): Knitting or purling two stitches together to reduce stitch count and shape the crown of the hat
- Increases (INC): Knitting or purling into both the front and back of a single stitch to add stitches where shaping requires expansion
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for aran-weight yarn, specifically recommending Debbie Bliss Pure Cotton Aran in green. The yardage requirement is 82 meters (approximately 90 yards) per 50-gram ball. Small sizes require 4 balls, medium sizes require 4 balls, and large sizes require 5 balls of aran-weight yarn. The pattern is designed to be worked with two strands of aran-weight yarn held together at the same time, which effectively creates a superchunky weight fabric. As an alternative, crafters may substitute one ball of any superchunky-weight yarn for every two aran-weight balls, provided the substitution knits to the same tension specifications.
Needles and Gauge
This pattern is worked on 8.00 mm (US size 11) knitting needles. Achieving the correct tension is essential for proper fit: the pattern specifies a gauge of 11 stitches and 15 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch when using 8.00 mm needles. Knitters should always swatch and measure their gauge before beginning the project to ensure the finished hat will fit correctly.
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Garden Gnome Superfast Slouch Hat is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following row-by-row instructions. The use of two strands of yarn held together creates a thicker, faster-knitting fabric, making this pattern quicker to complete than traditional single-strand hats despite the intermediate skill level. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 54, 60, or 66 stitches depending on size, followed by ribbed and stockinette sections
