Gansey Gayle Hat by Terry Morris
What Is Being Made
The Gansey Gayle Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat inspired by traditional Guernsey sweater patterning. This downloadable knitting pattern features a charming design accented with knits, purls, and bobbles that reference classic Fair Isle and Guernsey textile traditions. The hat is available in two adult sizes: Medium with an 18½" finished circumference and Large with a 21" finished circumference.
Knitting Techniques
This hat is knit in the round, a fundamental circular knitting technique that creates a seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern is designed for knitters of all skill levels, with instructions provided in two formats to accommodate different learning preferences: traditional line-by-line written instructions and visual knitting charts. This dual-format approach allows knitters to choose the method that works best for their experience level and reading style.
The construction begins with a ribbed edge that provides stretch and structure at the brim. The body of the hat incorporates a chevron pattern that creates a dynamic, directional visual element typical of traditional Guernsey design work.
Stitches Used
The Gansey Gayle Hat employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with decorative bobble accents:
- Knit stitch – the basic foundation stitch used throughout the hat
- Purl stitch – used in ribbing and pattern work to create texture and visual contrast
- Bobble stitch – a decorative raised stitch created by knitting through the front, back, front, and back of a single stitch, then working multiple rows before binding off. The bobble technique adds dimensional texture and visual interest to the hat's surface
- Chevron pattern – created through strategic increases and decreases that form the characteristic V-shaped lines inspired by traditional Guernsey sweater motifs
Materials and Gauge
The pattern requires 175 yards of worsted weight yarn for the Medium size and 200 yards for the Large size. The sample hat was knit using Dolce by Cascade Yarns, a luxury blend composed of 55% superfine alpaca, 23% wool, and 22% silk, which provides softness and drape while maintaining structure. This yarn blend is available in 50-gram skeins with 109 yards each, requiring 2 skeins to complete the project.
The pattern calls for US Size 6 (4.0mm) circular needles in a 16" length for working the main body of the hat in the round, along with one set of US Size 6 (4.0mm) double point needles for the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for circular needles. The recommended gauge is 6 stitches equals 1 inch, which should be verified before beginning to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.
