Product Description
Ganseys are the traditional British fisherman’s sweater from the 1800s. Some of the techniques used in making a gansey sweater will be learned by knitting this fingerless mitt. The mitt begins with the Channel Island Cast-on (directions and video link included), and you may choose from two options for the garter stitch gauntlet cuff: a continuous welt or split, overlapped welts. Small cables and traditional knit/ purl motifs will be worked in the hand. A thumb gusset reminiscent of the lower half of an underarm gusset is surrounded by the small baby cables. In addition, raised increases, and the lovely picot hem finish are included, as well as charts and a book list for further study.
Gansey Fingerless Mitts by Beth Brown-Reinsel
Project Overview
The Gansey Fingerless Mitts are a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Beth Brown-Reinsel that teaches traditional gansey techniques through a wearable accessory. Ganseys are the iconic British fisherman's sweaters that originated in the 1800s, and this fingerless mitt project introduces knitters to authentic gansey construction methods on a smaller, more manageable scale. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters and uses sport weight yarn.
What Is Being Made
These fingerless mitts are designed as a practical accessory that showcases traditional gansey knitting techniques. The mitts feature a gauntlet-style cuff that extends partway up the forearm, a patterned hand section with cable and motif work, and a thumb opening with integrated gusset shaping. The finished mitts combine functional design with the decorative elements characteristic of authentic gansey sweaters.
Featured Techniques
This pattern introduces several classic gansey construction methods:
- Channel Island Cast-on: A traditional cast-on method that creates a neat, finished edge suitable for gansey work
- Garter Stitch Gauntlet Cuff: The pattern offers two construction options—a continuous welt or split, overlapped welts—allowing knitters to choose their preferred method
- Thumb Gusset: Shaped using increases and reminiscent of the underarm gusset found in full gansey sweaters, this creates comfortable thumb shaping
- Picot Hem Finish: A decorative and traditional edge finish that adds a refined detail to the mitts
- Raised Increases: Shaping technique used throughout the pattern for seamless construction
Stitches Used
The Gansey Fingerless Mitts incorporate a variety of stitches typical of gansey design:
- Garter Stitch: Used for the gauntlet cuff section
- Stockinette Stitch: Forms the base for patterned sections
- Small Cables: Decorative elements worked in the hand section and surrounding the thumb gusset
- Traditional Knit/Purl Motifs: Textured patterns characteristic of gansey sweaters, creating visual interest on the hand
Materials Required
This pattern calls for specific materials to achieve authentic gansey results:
- Yarn: 3.5 ounces (100 grams / 245 yards per skein) of sport weight yarn in a plain-textured, light-colored fiber. The pattern notes that Guernsey yarn is appropriate for this project, connecting the mitts to their traditional roots
- Needles: One set of 7-inch double-pointed needles in US size 1 (2.25mm), though shorter needles may be substituted if preferred
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in basic stitches and can follow stitch patterns. The inclusion of techniques such as thumb gussets, cable work, and specialty cast-ons makes this suitable for knitters ready to expand their technical repertoire beyond beginner projects.
