Galloway Fingerless Gloves Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Galloway Fingerless Gloves are a pair of wrist-length fingerless mittens designed for adult wear. This crochet pattern creates versatile hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed, making them ideal for activities requiring dexterity while keeping the hands and wrists warm. The pattern accommodates two adult sizes: Small/Medium and Medium/Large.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental techniques to construct the gloves. The pattern is worked flat initially, then seamed together and subsequently worked in the round to create the cylindrical cuff and hand sections. This combination of flat and circular construction allows for precise shaping and a professional finish. The pattern includes specific shaping techniques at the thumb hole, with the right and left hand variations diverging at this point to ensure proper fit and symmetry.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The Galloway Fingerless Gloves utilize the following crochet stitches:

  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, providing a balanced fabric with good structure and drape
  • Half Double Crochet 3rd Front Loop (hdc3rdfl) – A textured variation that works into the third front loop only, creating visual interest and dimensional detail
  • Half Double Crochet 2 Together (hdc2tog) – A decrease stitch used for shaping, particularly around the hand and thumb areas
  • Chain (ch) – Used for foundation stitches and creating chain spaces
  • Slip Stitch (slst) – Used for joining rounds and seaming sections together

Additional abbreviations include chain space (chsp), skip (sk), yarn over (yo), and stitch/stitches (st/sts). The pattern notes that beginning chain-1 stitches do not count as a stitch.

Materials and Tools

The Galloway Fingerless Gloves require approximately 140 to 160 yards of yarn, accommodating both worsted weight and aran weight yarns. The pattern designer used Knit Picks City Tweed in the Aran/Heavy Worsted category for the sample project. A US size H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook is recommended; the designer used a Furls Odyssey hook for the original pattern. Additional materials include scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the flat-worked sections.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern gauge is 5 rows by 7 stitches over a 2-inch square worked in half double crochet. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The pattern offers flexibility for customization: the circumference can be adjusted by adding additional rows to the cuff, while the hand length can be modified by adding or subtracting rounds, allowing crafters to tailor the gloves to individual measurements beyond the two standard sizes provided.

Pattern Structure and Difficulty

Rated as Easy to Intermediate skill level, the Galloway Fingerless Gloves are accessible to crocheters with basic stitch knowledge while offering enough complexity to engage intermediate makers. The combination of flat construction, seaming, and circular working, along with the use of textured stitch variations and shaping techniques, provides a well-rounded project that builds practical crochet skills.
