Free Crochet Pattern: Fruit Appliqués – Apple and Apple Slice in Schachenmayr Catania

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr provides instructions for crocheting two charming fruit appliqués: a whole apple and an apple slice. Each finished piece measures 4.5 cm wide and 5.5 cm tall, making them ideal as decorative embellishments for children's clothing, bags, home accessories, or handmade gifts. The pattern also includes instructions for small leaves worked in two contrasting green shades, adding a lifelike, playful finishing touch to both appliqués.

Designs Included

The Whole Apple Appliqué

The apple is worked in the round using a magic ring (Fadenring) as the starting point, following Crochet Chart 1 (Häkelschrift 1) for three rounds worked entirely in signalrot (signal red, colour 00115). Once the main body is complete, two additional details are added in kaffee (coffee brown, colour 00162):

  • The blossom end (Blütenansatz): worked by joining yarn at a slip stitch at the end of the third round and crocheting 2 single crochet stitches plus 1 slip stitch into the same insertion point.
  • The stem (Stiel): created by joining yarn at a slip stitch at the centre of the third round and chaining 3 stitches, then working 1 slip stitch into each chain stitch back down to the base.

All yarn ends are carefully woven in upon completion.

The Apple Slice Appliqué

The apple slice is also worked in the round from a magic ring, following the same Crochet Chart 1 for three rounds. However, it uses a two-colour construction: rounds 1 and 2 are worked in weiß (white, colour 00106) to represent the flesh of the apple, while round 3 is worked in signalrot (signal red, colour 00115) to represent the skin. Colour changes are made by working the closing slip stitch of each round in the new colour, ensuring clean colour transitions. The same blossom end and stem details in kaffee are added as described for the whole apple.

As a finishing embellishment, the apple slice is decorated with black opaque Rocailles seed beads (2.6 mm) sewn on with a sewing needle to represent the apple seeds, adding a realistic and decorative dimensional detail.

The Leaves

A total of four leaves are crocheted — two in apfel (apple green, colour 00205) and two in anis (anise green, colour 00245). Each leaf is worked as a single round following Crochet Chart 2 (Häkelschrift 2). The foundation begins with a chain of 6 stitches, and the first slip stitch is worked into the second chain from the hook, with the entire leaf completed in one continuous round. One leaf in each colour is then sewn onto the apple and one of each onto the apple slice, as shown in the pattern illustration.

Techniques Used

  • Crocheting in the round from a magic ring (Fadenring), a technique that eliminates the centre hole common with chain-ring starts
  • Working from crochet charts (Häkelschrift 1 and Häkelschrift 2), which use symbol-based diagrams rather than written row-by-row instructions
  • Colour changing at the end of a round by working the closing slip stitch in the new colour
  • Foundation chain with a single worked round for the leaf shapes
  • Embroidery / bead embellishment using Rocailles seed beads sewn onto the finished crochet surface
  • Weaving in ends (Fäden vernähen) for a neat, professional finish
  • Sewing appliqués onto finished projects using a yarn or sewing needle
