Product Description

Frosted is the pattern that got me into writting a pattern. Friends of mine interested on the construction when I brought the project to a meet up in February. After explaining the construction as simple as I can, they encourage me to write the pattern and sale it.

The construction I use is not a very common on knitwear design. The lines on the center front and the back divided the body into 2 parts work sideways from the lines. The small lace pattern at the back is for a treat when you bored with the stockinette and the garter v-neck on the front so crisp and visually elongated the body. The sideways contruction is worked with a German short rows to accomodate the curved line and the slant of the v-neck and a very great opportunity to work a vertical stripes with a varigated or ombre handdyed yarn, lets say its flattering for many people.

Other than lace knitting, picking up stitches, german short rows, you could also learn to kitchener sticth to seam.

The pattern has been tested.

Frosted V-Neck Top by Sally Yanita

What Is Being Made

The Frosted V-Neck Top is a knitted garment designed as an intermediate-level project by independent designer Sally Yanita. This top features a distinctive V-neckline and is available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL, with finished chest circumferences from 82 cm (32") to 132 cm (52"). The garment showcases thoughtful construction techniques that create visual interest and a refined finished piece.

Construction Techniques

The Frosted V-Neck Top employs several advanced knitting techniques that elevate it beyond a basic garment:

  • Pickup Method: The top is constructed by picking up stitches from both sides of a center line, which continues from the front to the back side of the garment. This technique creates a seamless integration between sections and allows for precise stitch placement.
  • Short Rows: A significant amount of short rows are used throughout the body construction. This technique adds shaping and dimension to the garment, allowing the knitter to create curves and contours without increasing or decreasing stitches in traditional ways.
  • Seaming: The side seams are finished using the Kitchener stitch, also known as grafting. This method creates an invisible seam by weaving live stitches together, resulting in a professional and seamless appearance along the sides.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches combined with the shaping techniques mentioned above. The interplay of short rows and picked-up stitches creates the garment's distinctive silhouette and visual appeal.

Materials

The Frosted V-Neck Top is designed to be worked with sport weight or 4-ply yarn, making it suitable for creating a lightweight, drape-friendly garment. The designer used ombre hand-dyed yarn from a local independent dyer for the original sample, which resulted in asymmetrical color distribution between the right and left sides of the garment—a beautiful characteristic of hand-dyed materials. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required, along with a crochet hook or tapestry needle for the Kitchener stitch seaming.

Design Notes

This pattern is intended for personal use and finished items may be sold, though the pattern itself cannot be reproduced, distributed, resold, or published without permission from the designer. The asymmetrical color qualities that emerge from hand-dyed yarn add unique character to each finished garment, making every version of the Frosted V-Neck Top a one-of-a-kind piece.
