Product Description

Introducing the beloved characters of the book series, Frog and Toad. A friend asked if I could make the knit version but as I don’t knit, I created this crochet version. This is a fun amigurumi pattern, using a worsted weight yarn. A sport weight could be used as a substitute, the finished size will vary.

This is an intermediate pattern.

What Is Being Made

This downloadable crochet pattern creates amigurumi versions of the beloved characters Frog and Toad from the classic book series. The pattern includes instructions for crafting both characters as stuffed toys, with Frog measuring 7.75 inches long and Toad measuring 6.5 inches long. Each character features detailed clothing and facial features, making them charming decorative toys or gifts for fans of the literary characters.

Craft & Techniques

This is an intermediate-level crochet pattern designed specifically for crafters with some experience in amigurumi construction. Amigurumi is the Japanese technique of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys using tight stitches and strategic increases and decreases to create rounded, sculptural forms. The pattern employs the fundamental amigurumi approach of working in continuous rounds to build the body pieces, which are then stuffed and assembled together.

The designer, Gwen Buttke McGannon, created this crochet interpretation after being asked to make a knit version of these characters. Since the designer works primarily with crochet rather than knitting, this pattern represents a thoughtful adaptation of beloved characters into the crochet medium, making them accessible to crocheters who may not knit.

Stitches & Construction Methods

While the pattern document excerpt does not detail every individual stitch used, amigurumi patterns of this type typically employ fundamental crochet stitches including:

  • Single crochet as the primary stitch for creating tight, dense fabric
  • Increases and decreases to shape the three-dimensional forms
  • Continuous rounds worked in spiral fashion for seamless construction
  • Color changes to create the clothing and facial features on each character

The pattern requires working with two different crochet hook sizes—a D/3 (3.25 mm) hook and a B/1 (2.25 mm) hook—allowing the crafter to adjust tension and create different fabric densities for various components. A tapestry needle is used for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the finished pieces.

Materials & Yarn

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (weight category 4), though the designer notes that sport weight yarn may be substituted, though this will affect the finished size of the toys. The recommended yarn is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, a 100% Peruvian Highland Wool available in 1.5 oz (50g) skeins with 137 yards (127 meters) per skein.

The color palette includes six coordinating shades from the Knit Picks line:

  • Forest Heather (A): Used for the Frog body and Toad outfit components
  • Brass Heather (B): Creates the Toad body
  • Camel Heather (C): Forms the Frog pants
  • Amber Heather (D): Constructs the Frog jacket
  • White (E): Details the eyes and Toad outfit accents
  • Coal (F): Defines the mouth and eye pupils

Additional materials needed include poly-fil fiberfill for stuffing the toys, a stuffing stick to help distribute filling evenly into small spaces, and appropriate crochet hooks sized to achieve the specified gauge of 11 stitches and 12 rows over 2 inches in worsted weight yarn.

Finished Dimensions & Gauge

The completed Frog amigurumi measures 7.75 inches in length, while the Toad measures 6.5 inches in length. Achieving the correct gauge—11 stitches and 12 rows equaling 2 inches—is important for obtaining the intended finished size and proportions of these character toys.
